New Chennai Greenfield International Airport is a proposed greenfield airport project to serve the city of Chennai, India. [1] [2] It will be built near Parandur of Kanchipuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It will serve the city alongside the existing Chennai International Airport. The proposed airport will be spread around 5,000 acres. The Government of Tamil Nadu has declared that Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) will lead the project. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducted surveys on various areas near Chennai for a new airport for the city. Initially, a site near Sriperumbudur was fixed for the airport. But due to delays and cost of the land, the government decided to set the new airport in Parandur. [3] The airport will also boost trade from Chennai and neighbouring districts as it will have its own dedicated cargo terminal, leading to a rapid increase in the economic development of the state. The airport will be built on 4,970 acres of land. The distance between Chennai to Parandur is around 70 km, and from the existing airport is around 57 km, which takes around 1 hour 50 minutes to reach by road. AAI found two sites at Parandur and Pannur comparatively more feasible for development of airports. AAI has forwarded the pre-feasibility report to TNIDC, advising it to carry out Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS) survey and charting work at the two identified sites. After comparing the viability and feasibility, including the presence of habitations and industrial establishments and the land acquisition cost of both the sites, the Government of Tamil Nadu confirmed the Parandur site as the location for development of the greenfield airport.

History

The project was first proposed in 1998 by the then Minister of Civil Aviation, Ananth Kumar. He first gave the plan for the proposal of a new airport which would serve as an alternative to the existing airport at Chennai, which in the future would get constrained and will not be able to cope up with the future traffic.

Connectivity

The airport will be linked via a spur road with the under-construction Bangalore–Chennai Expressway, and a proposed metro line of Chennai Metro, which will directly connect the city with the airport. Currently, the nearest railway station is the Tirumalpur railway station of the Chennai Suburban System, which is 10 km away from the airport.

Location

The airport will be built on 4,970 acres of land, spread over 13 villages in Parandur, a small town located in Kanchipuram district. The distance between Chennai to Parandur is around 70 km, and from the existing airport is around 57 km, which takes around 1 hour 50 minutes to reach by road.

Land acquisition protests

The people in the villages are against the project due to concerns of land loss leading to their loss of livelihood. The airport will be spread over 13 villages, where farming and fishing are the primary occupations of the people living in these villages. Farmers and fishermen have staged a walkout, and have said that they would vacate the land for the proposed airport only if they are allotted a plot of land, similar to the one they own at present, so that they could continue farming and fishing to sustain their livelihood. Tholkappia Poonga or Adyar Eco Park is an ecological park set up by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the Adyar estuary area of Chennai, India. According to the government, the project, conceived based on the master plan for the restoration of the vegetation of the freshwater ecosystems of the Coromandel Coast, especially the fragile ecosystem of the Adyar estuary and creek, was expected to cost around ₹ 1,000 million which will include the beautification of 358 acres of land. The park's ecosystem consists of tropical dense evergreen forest, predominantly comprising trees and shrubs that have thick dark green foliage throughout the year, with over 160 woody species, and comprises six vegetative elements such as trees, shrubs, lianas, epiphytes, herbs and tuberous species. The park was opened to public by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on 22 January 2011 and named after the renowned Tamil scholar Tholkappiar. About 65 percent of the park is covered by water and artefacts and signages. In the first 2 months of its inauguration, nearly 4,000 children from several schools in the city and the nearby Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts have visited the park to learn about wetland conservation, eco-restoration and water management. While the first phase of the ecopark covered about 4.16 acres of CRZ-III area, the entire area covered under the second phase falls under this category.

Thanjavur Air Force Station is an Indian Air Force base serving the city of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, India. It is located 12 km (7.5 mi) south-west of the city in Pilaiyarpatti and near the village of Ravusapatti. It is home to the No. 222 squadron of the IAF's Sukhoi Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft - the first IAF fighter squadron in Southern India. The air force base was expected to start functioning by 2012. However, the schedule was delayed, and the air force base was inaugurated on 27 May 2013 by the then Minister of Defence, A. K. Antony.

The Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway, or National Expressway 7 (NE-7), is an under construction 258 km (160 mi) long, 4-lane wide access-controlled expressway between the cities of Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka and Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. It will run from Hoskote in Bengaluru Metropolitan Region Development Authority to Sriperumbudur in Chennai Metropolitan Area. It is planned to allow vehicles to reach 120 km/h (75 mph). This expressway was designated as a National Expressway on 1 January 2021. The total project value is ₹ 17,930 crore. It will be completed by March 2024.

Kasimedu is a hamlet in the neighbourhood of Royapuram, in Chennai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. This hamlet is occupied by fishermen whose families depend on the fishing harbour and the fish market nearby. It stretches for about 2 km, near Ennore fishing harbour along the shore, north of Chennai Port. Large numbers of victims from Kasimedu fishing community were found during the tsunami observed on 26 December 2004. Kasimedu is located at about 5 km from Chennai Beach railway station. Near about 200 tons of fishes are brought to Kasimedu, daily. State Highway 114 passes through Kasimedu.
