Chennai Greenfield Airport is a proposed greenfield airport project to serve the Chennai Metropolitan Area in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is planned to be built near Parandur in Kanchipuram district, and will serve as the secondary airport alongside the existing Chennai International Airport.
Plans for a new greenfield airport for the Chennai Metropolitan Area was put forward as early as in 1998. [1] In 2007, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu announced that the new airport would be set up in 4,820 acres (1,950 ha) land near Sriperumbudur. [2] [3] As the new airport was delayed due to land acquisition problems, [2] [4] an expansion plan was unveiled to expand the existing Chennai International Airport in 2018 to increase the terminal area to 160,000 m2 (1,700,000 sq ft) with a capacity of 35 million passengers. [5] The existing airport is expected to reach saturation by 2035. [6] The Government of Tamil Nadu initially proposed alternate locations such as Mamandur for the airport, but the project was not started. [6] [7]
In 2022, the state government announced renewed plans to build a new airport. [8] The state government identified Padalam, Thiruporur, Pannur and Parandur as the possible sites for the airport. [9] After a feasibility study, the Airports Authority of India shortlisted Parandur and Pannur as the sites for the proposed airport. [10] In August 2022, the Government of Tamil Nadu selected Parandur in Kanchipuram district as location for the new airport on 4,970 acres (2,010 ha) of land. [11] [12] The planned airport would be spread over 13 villages, and farmlands. [1] The proposed land acquisition for the airport has led to protests by the local villagers due to the fear of loss of livelihood. [2] [13]
In 2022, the state government proposed an extension for the planned Orange Line of the Chennai Metro from Poonamallee to Parandur at a cost of ₹107.12 billion (US$1.2 billion). [14] [15] [16] In August 2024, another new extension from the Airport metro to Poonamallee was proposed by CMRL with the aim of connecting the existing airport with the new airport with the old airport by metro. [17] [18]
The people in the villages are against the project due to concerns of land loss leading to their loss of livelihood. The airport will be spread over 13 villages, where farming and fishing are the primary occupations of the people living in these villages. Farmers and fishermen have staged a walkout, and have said that they would vacate the land for the proposed airport only if they are allotted a plot of land, similar to the one they own at present, so that they could continue farming and fishing to sustain their livelihood. The Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System, commonly referred to as Chennai MRTS, is a metropolitan rail transit system in Chennai, India. It is operated by Southern Railway of the state-owned Indian Railways. Opened in 1995, it was the first elevated railway line in India. The railway line runs from Chennai Beach to Velachery, covering a distance of 19.34 km (12.02 mi) with 18 stations and is integrated with the wider Chennai suburban railway network.

Tholkappia Poonga or Adyar Eco Park is an ecological park set up by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the Adyar estuary area of Chennai, India. According to the government, the project, conceived based on the master plan for the restoration of the vegetation of the freshwater ecosystems of the Coromandel Coast, especially the fragile ecosystem of the Adyar estuary and creek, was expected to cost around ₹ 1,000 million which will include the beautification of 358 acres of land. The park's ecosystem consists of tropical dense evergreen forest, predominantly comprising trees and shrubs that have thick dark green foliage throughout the year, with over 160 woody species, and comprises six vegetative elements such as trees, shrubs, lianas, epiphytes, herbs and tuberous species. The park was opened to public by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on 22 January 2011 and named after the renowned Tamil scholar Tholkappiar. About 65 percent of the park is covered by water and artefacts and signages. In the first 2 months of its inauguration, nearly 4,000 children from several schools in the city and the nearby Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts have visited the park to learn about wetland conservation, eco-restoration and water management. While the first phase of the ecopark covered about 4.16 acres of CRZ-III area, the entire area covered under the second phase falls under this category.
Salem Airport is a domestic airport serving the city of Salem, along with neighboring cities of Erode and Karur, in Tamil Nadu, India. It is located at Kamalapuram in Omalur taluk, 19 km (12 mi) north-west from the city centre. A branch line of corridor five, known as Line 5B, from Koyambedu to Avadi has been proposed with detailed project report preparation expected to be completed by January 2025.
