Nemilichery railway station is one of the railway stations of the Chennai Central–Arakkonam section of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network. It serves the neighbourhood of Nemilichery, Thiruninravur a suburb of Chennai, and is located 27 km west of Chennai Central railway station. It has an elevation of 32.05 m above sea level.

History

Nemilichery railway station is the newest railway station in the Chennai Central–Arakkonam section of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network. With the two nearest railway stations of Pattabiram and Thirunindravur on the eastern and western sides, respectively, lying 4.01 km apart, there was a demand for a new railway station in the midst of these two stations, which would benefit more than 100,000 people in the neighbourhood.^[4] Southern Railway gave its in principle approval for the construction of a new railway station in 2002 and the site inspection was carried out by the then minister of state for railways, A. K. Moorthy, in 2003.^[5] The railway station was initially estimated at a cost of ₹ 5.8 million, with the Jaya Group of Educational Institutions contributing ₹ 2.5 million as public contribution towards the construction.^[6] The final cost of construction of the station, however, was about ₹ 10 million,^[7] including ₹ 3.574 million towards earth work for laying the platform and ₹ 3.828 million towards shifting of tracks.^[4]

The station was inaugurated on 5 February 2010.^[7] The lines at the station, however, were electrified on 29 November 1979, with the electrification of the Chennai Central–Tiruvallur section.^[1]

The subway connecting the two sides of the neighbourhoods was completed by March 2016 and was commissioned to public use on 21 April 2016^[8]

The station serves the neighbourhood, including East Thiruninravur, Srinath Nagar, TI Nagar, Gomathi Amman Nagar, Ambal Nagar, Nehru Nagar, Nemilichery, Annambedu, West Thandurai, Abirami Nagar, and Rajankuppam.

It is also one of the railway terminals of the Chennai Beach–Tambaram section of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network, situated at a distance of 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from the centre of Tambaram and 27 kilometres (17 mi) from Chennai Beach station. It is one of the fastest-growing railway hubs outside Chennai Central in the southern direction. Every day, on an average, around 150,000 commuters use the station. About 500 suburban electric trains operate from Tambaram, including those between Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram. Further, more than 25 express trains, including those bound for Howrah and other places in the northern India, pass through the town. It is also the third busiest station in the city. It is one of the four railway terminals within Chennai City. The daily ticket sales at Tambaram fetch ₹ 1 million, half of which comes from suburban travellers. It is the second most revenue-generating station in Chennai after Moore Market Complex. A total of 52 trains pass through the station.

Avadi railway station is an NSG–2 category Indian railway station in Chennai railway division of Southern Railway zone. It is one of the major railway termini of the Chennai Central–Arakkonam section of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network. It serves the neighbourhood of Avadi, a suburb of Chennai located 23 km west of the city centre. It is situated at Tirumalairajapuram locality of Avadi, with an elevation of 26.85 m above sea level. According to a railway release in 2008, there are plans to develop Avadi station as a coaching terminal for Chennai Central railway station, on the lines of Tambaram station being developed as a terminal for Egmore railway station.

It is one of the terminal and oldest stations in the network where some of the suburban trains originate and terminate. It serves the neighbourhood of Tiruvallur, a suburb of Chennai, and is located 41 km west of the Chennai Central railway station. It has an elevation of 47.46 m above sea level.
