The Chennai Veerans was a Tier-1 level field hockey team Premier Hockey League in India. In the inaugural cup in 2005, the Chennai Veerans led by Ignace Tirkey finished at the bottom of the group with two wins and six losses.
Chennai Veerans were relegated to Tier-II division of PHL in 2006, where they played along with Orissa Steelers, Lucknow Nawabs, Delhi Dazzlers and Imphal Rangers. In this league Chennai Veerans finished runners-up to Orissa Steelers. It was later decided that in 2007 no team should be relegated from Tier I.
India competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. The Indian Olympic Association sent a total of 73 athletes, 48 men, and 28 women, to compete in 14 sports. Men's field hockey was the only team-based sport in which India had its representation in these Olympic games. As a pleasant surprise, the shooting team came successful with a silver medal, the winner being Capt. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore. He was the first Indian to win an individual silver medal.
Premier Hockey League (PHL) was a professional field hockey league in India. There were seven teams in the PHL. The competition was held every year from 2005 until 2008.

The Men's Field Hockey Olympic Qualifier was the fourth edition of the Men's Field hockey Olympic Qualification Tournament. It was held at Club de Campo in Madrid, Spain from 2 until 13 March 2004. Twelve nations took part, and they played a round-robin tournament in two groups of six. The top six or seven teams qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
The Orissa Steelers are the winners of the Premier Hockey League 2007, India's former national level field hockey tournament. The originally proposed name for the team was Rourkela Steelers, after the city which is said to be the hockey Capital of Orissa.
Steel Azin Football Club was an Iranian football club based in Tehran, Iran. The club was owned by Hossein Hedayati, owner of Steel Azin Iranian Holding Co. Steel Azin club also had a volleyball team, sponsored by the same company, which competed in the Iranian Volleyball Super League.
The Hyderabad Sultans was the Indian Premier Hockey League team from Hyderabad. The squad was captained by Sardara Singh in the 2008 edition. They were winners of the first Premier Hockey League in 2005.

The title was won by Hyderabad Sultans and Chandigarh Dynamos got promotion to premier division as Chennai Veerans were relegated.

Orissa Steelers won the title in 2007. Sher-e-Jalandhar was the runners up.
India competed at the 2002 Asian Games held in Busan, South Korea. India was ranked 8th with 10 gold medals. Sunita Rani's gold and bronze medals, which she won in the women's 1,500 m and 5,000 m was reinstated after she appealed in the dope scam. India moved up to the seventh spot from the previous eighth spot in the medals table.

Two reserve players could also be nominated to be available should a player enrolled in the official squad become injured during the tournament.
