The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) (sometimes also referred to as Matscience) is a research centre located in Chennai, India. [1] [2] It is a constituent institute of the Homi Bhabha National Institute. [3]

IMSc is a national institute for fundamental research in frontier disciplines of the mathematical and physical sciences: theoretical computer science, mathematics, theoretical physics, and computational biology. It is funded mainly by the Department of Atomic Energy. [4] The institute operates the Kabru supercomputer. [5]

History

The institute was founded by Alladi Ramakrishnan in 1962. [6] It is modelled after the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, United States. It went through a phase of expansion when E. C. G. Sudarshan in the 1980s and R. Ramachandran in 1990s were the directors. The current director of the institute is V.Ravindran. [6]

Academics

The institute has a graduate research program to which a group of students are admitted each year to work towards a Ph.D. degree. IMSc hosts scientists at the post-doctoral level and supports a visiting scientist program in areas of research in the institute. [1]

Located in South Chennai, in the Adyar-Taramani area, the institute is on the Central Institutes of Technology (CIT) campus. [6] The institute maintains a student hostel, flatlets for long-term visitors, married students and post-doctoral fellows, and the institute guest house. [6] IMSc has its own faculty housing in Tiruvanmiyur near the seashore. [6]

A former distinguished professor at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad, He is also an honorary fellow in National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, India he is also a Morningstar Visiting professor at MIT and a distinguished professor at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study. His main area of work is string theory. He was among the first recipients of the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics "for opening the path to the realization that all string theories are different limits of the same underlying theory".

He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award for outstanding contribution to physical sciences, which is the highest honour for a scientist in India, in the year 1992.

Kabru is a supercomputer that uses a 2.4 GHz Pentium Xeon Cluster and Linux to provide a sustained speed of 959 gigaflops. It was developed by the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) in Chennai, India. In June 2004, Kabru was listed as #264 in the TOP500 list of the world's most powerful computers. It takes its name from a Himalayan peak.

Vinod Johri was an Indian astrophysicist. He was an eminent cosmologist, a retired professor of astrophysics at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and an emeritus professor at Lucknow University since 1995. Johri had over 75 research publications and articles published in pioneering journals. His major contributions in cosmological research included 'power law inflation, genesis of quintessence fields of dark energy and phantom cosmologies'. He was the co-author of the first model of power law inflation in Brans–Dicke theory along with C. Mathiazhagan. He was honored by Uttar Pradesh Government by Research Award of the Council of Science & Technology (CSIR).

Radha Balakrishnan is an Indian theoretical physicist. She is a retired professor at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, India. After her early work in condensed matter physics on quantum crystals, she switched fields to nonlinear dynamics and has published research papers on a variety of topics.

Deepak Dhar is an Indian theoretical physicist known for his research on statistical physics and stochastic processes. In 2022, he became the first Indian to be awarded the Boltzmann Medal, the highest recognition in statistical physics awarded once every three years by IUPAP, for exceptional contributions to the subject.

Arun Mallojirao Jayannavar was an Indian condensed matter physicist and a senior professor at the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar. Known for his research on many interdisciplinary areas of condensed matter physics, Jayannavar was an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian National Science Academy. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the government of India for scientific research, awarded Jayannavar the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to physical sciences in 1998.

Aditi Sen De is an Indian scientist, a professor in quantum information and computation group at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad.She was born on 1st October 1974 in Kolkata,India. She is known for her research on quantum information and computation, quantum communication including quantum cryptography, quantum optics and many-body physics. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded her the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology for her contributions to physical sciences in 2018. She is the first female physicist to be given this honour. In 2022, she was elected as a member of Indian Academy of Sciences and Indian National Science Academy.

Indumathi D. is an Indian particle physicist and a professor at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai, India. She has been an active member of the Indian Neutrino Observatory (INO) project since its inception.

Saket Saurabh is an Indian Computer Scientist who is currently the Professor of Theoretical Computer Science at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai (IMSc), India and an adjunct faculty at University of Bergen, Norway. He specializes in parameterized complexity, exact algorithms, graph algorithms and game theory. His fundamental contributions to the area of parameterized complexity include procedures for obtaining algorithmic lower bounds, and meta-theorems on preprocessing. Saket Saurabh was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Mathematical Sciences in the year 2021.
