Medavakkam is a southern suburb of Chennai in Tambaram taluk of Chengalpattu district, which is adjacent to the neighbourhood of Sholinganallur, Madipakkam, Selaiyur, Keelkattalai, Velachery and Tambaram and it is center place to the developing suburbs like Ponmar, Ottiyambakkam and Sithalapakkam. Medavakkam is administered by Village Panchayat, which comes under the Shollinganallur MLA Constituency and South Chennai MP Constituency. Medavakkam will be part of Tambaram City Municipal Corporation. This location is a fast developing residential locality due to its close proximity to the IT corridor OMR (approx 4 km from Sholinganallur) and SEZ in Medavakkam Sholinganallur Road.[ citation needed ]

State Highway 49A (SH-49A), also known as Rajiv Gandhi Salai and Rajiv Gandhi IT Expressway or just IT Expressway, is a major road connecting Chennai, Tamil Nadu state with Mahabalipuram in Chengalpattu district, in the same state. It is 45 km long and was earlier known as the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). The road starts from Madhya Kailash Temple on Sardar Patel Road in South-East Chennai and terminates on East Coast Road near Mahabalipuram.

It is one of the stops on what is called as the IT expressway, on Old Mahabalipuram Road, now known as Rajiv Gandhi Salai, the first six lane road in Chennai. Okkiyam Thoraipakkam is on the eastern banks of the Pallikaranai marsh which has been designated as a reserve forest area and is one of the few remaining significant natural ecosystems within Chennai. Thoraipakkam is 3 km in length, starting from Perungudi to its north. It is located exactly in the middle of the OMR Road.
