Teynampet, also Teynampettai, is one of the busiest commercial localities in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. [1] Part of the city's central business district, it is surrounded by Gopalapuram in the north, Mylapore in the east, Alwarpet in the south, Nandanam in the south-west and T.Nagar in the west. [2] The Teynampet Signal is one of the most important road junctions in Chennai and witnesses some of the worst traffic during peak hours in the city. [3] Teynampet is home to some of the most expensive real estate and properties in Chennai. [1] The Teynampet section of Anna Salai hosts some of the most important Government offices and luxury hotels in the city. [4]
Teynampet is along Anna Salai, the arterial road of Chennai. Teynampet derives its name from Thennam and pettai (Place of coconut trees) due to the coconut groves that once existed there.
As of 2018, Teynampet zone had a green cover of more than 20 percent, as against the city's 14.9 percent average. [5]
Poes Garden houses two of the most celebrated houses in Chennai—residences of the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalithaa named Veda Nilayam and the actor Rajinikanth. [6] Poes Garden also houses the residences of the former acting general secretary of the AIADMK V. K. Sasikala named Jayalalithaa Illam and the actor Dhanush.
Gopalapuram area houses the residence of former chief minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi. Teynampet also houses Anna Arivalayam, which is the headquarters of the DMK party; also PMK party headquarters at Vannia Teynampet [7] and upscale hotels such as the Hyatt Regency and Marriott Courtyard. The famous Diocesan Church and the Anna Flyover are also in this region.
Teynampet houses two of Chennai's well known women's colleges, Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College (more commonly known as SIET) and Stella Maris College. The schools in and around Teynampet include SIET Boys and Girls School, DAV Girls and D.A.V Boys School in Gopalapuram, Sri Sarada Matriculation School in Gopalapuram, National Public School (N.P.S) in Gopalapuram and Church Park Convent.
Teynampet is a fastest growing retail hub. [8] Prestige Polygon is home to Microsoft Corporation.
Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran , popularly known by his initials M.G.R., was an Indian actor, politician, and philanthropist who served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 1977 until his death in 1987. He was the founder and first general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. On 19 March 1988, Ramachandran was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour. Ramachandran is regarded as one of the most influential politicians of post-independence India. Apart from politics, as a film personality he won the National Film Award, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and two Filmfare Award South.
Thoothukudi is a port city, a municipal corporation, and an industrial city in Thoothukudi district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city lies on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. Thoothukudi is the capital and headquarters of Thoothukudi district. It is located about 590 kilometres southeast of Chennai, 190 kilometres northeast of Thiruvananthapuram, and 580 kilometres southeast of Bengaluru. According to the Confederation of Indian Industry, Thoothukudi has the second highest Human Development Index in Tamil Nadu, next to Chennai. Thoothukudi City serves as the headquarters of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Limited, one of the leading private sector banks in India. Thoothukudi is an emerging energy and industrial hub of South India.
Thyagaraya Nagar, commonly known as T. Nagar, and historically known as East Mambalam, is a very affluent commercial and residential neighbourhood in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is surrounded by Nungambakkam in the North, Teynampet in the East, Nandanam in the South-East, C.I.T. Nagar in the South and West Mambalam and Kodambakkam in the West. The stretch between Duraiswamy Road and T. Nagar Bus Stand has some of the costliest real estates in Chennai. It was constructed between 1923 and 1925 by the Madras Presidency government of the Raja of Panagal as a part of town planning activities initiated according to the Madras Town Planning Act of 1920. The town was named after P. Thyagaraya Chetty. The streets, parks and localities in the new neighbourhood were named after important officials in the provincial government.
Gopalapuram is a prime residential locality in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is surrounded by Royapettah in the North and East, Mylapore in the South-East, Teynampet in the South and Thousand Lights in the West. It is located 17 km (11 mi) from the Chennai International Airport and 3 km (1.9 mi) from Chennai Central railway station. It is located in between Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai and Anna Salai. Avvai Shanmugam Road passes through Gopalapuram, dividing it into North Gopalapuram and South Gopalapuram. Gopalapuram comes under Chennai Central Lok Sabha constituency.
Egmore is a neighbourhood of Chennai, India. Situated on the northern banks of the Coovum River, Egmore is an important residential area as well as a commercial and transportation hub. The Egmore Railway Station was the main terminus of the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway and later, the metre gauge section of the Southern division of the Indian Railways. It continues to be an important railway junction. The Government Museum, Chennai is also situated in Egmore. Other important institutions based in Egmore include the Government Women and Children's Hospital, the Tamil Nadu State Archives and the Tamil Nadu Archaeology Department. The Wesley Church, Egmore is the oldest church of the region.
Guindy is a neighborhood of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The Kathipara junction where Anna Salai, Mount-Poonamallee Road, Inner Ring Road, 100 Feet Road or Jawaharlal Nehru Road, and GST Road meet here. It is one of the important nodal points of road traffic in the metropolitan area. It is also a commercial hub. Here is headquarters of Ashok Leyland This junction serves as the entry point to the city limits from the suburbs. It is surrounded by Saidapet in the North, Kotturpuram and Adyar towards the East, Velachery in the South, Adambakkam and Alandur in the South-West, Parangimalai in the West and Ekkatutthangal in the North-West. Guindy is home to many important landmarks in the city, the most famous amongst them being the Guindy National Park. It also serves as a main hub for several small and medium scale industries. Transportation to/from the neighborhood is catered by Guindy railway station and Guindy metro station.
Nandanam is a neighborhood in Chennai, India. It is located on the northern banks of Adyar River, on the other side of Kotturpuram, and is bound by Saidapet, T. Nagar and Teynampet. In addition to a number of institutions and companies, Nandanam offers a calm residential location. It is known for the Nandanam Arts College that was established in 1901 and the Nandanam Junction, commonly referred as "Nandanam signal", on the arterial Anna Salai—one of the busiest traffic junctions in Chennai. The underground Nandanam Metro Station, located below the junction, serves the area.
Alwarpet is a residential zone in central Chennai and is a part of the greater Teynampet region. It is surrounded by Teynampet in the north and west, Mylapore, Mandavelli and Abhiramapuram in the east, Raja Annamalaipuram in the south, and Nandanam in the southwest. It is among the most upscale neighbourhoods in Chennai. The geographical location of this area allows centralized access to all parts of the city, so it is typically called as "Heart of Chennai". The Central Railway station is about 7 km (4.3 mi) and Chennai International Airport is around 11 km (6.8 mi). The nearest Metro station is Teynampet metro station. A new exclusive station for Alwarpet has been proposed under Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project which is likely to begin by March 2021 and expected to be completed within 5-7 years.
Anna Salai, formerly known as St. Thomas Mount Road or simply Mount Road, is an arterial road in Chennai, India. It starts at the Cooum Creek, south of Fort St George, leading in a south-westerly direction towards St. Thomas Mount, and ends at the Kathipara Junction in Guindy. Beyond the Kathipara Junction, a branch road arises traversing westwards to Poonamallee to form the Mount-Poonamallee Road while the main branch continuing southwards to Chennai Airport, Tambaram and beyond to form Grand Southern Trunk Road. Anna Salai, which is more than 400 years old, is acknowledged as the most important road in Chennai city. The head offices of many commercial enterprises and public buildings are located along Anna Salai. It is the second longest road in Chennai, after EVR Periyar Salai.
Sardar Patel Road is an arterial road in Chennai, India, which runs from Mount Road eastwards through Guindy and Adyar for 3.2-kilometre (2.0 mi) up to the sea coast where it turns north and crosses the Adyar River to Raja Annamalaipuram.
George Town is a neighbourhood in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is near the Fort Saint George, Chennai. It is also known as Muthialpet and Parry's corner. It is an historical area of Madras city from where its expansion began in the 1640s. It extends from the Bay of Bengal in the east to Park town on the west. Jayaram Jayalalithaa was an Indian politician and actress who served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for more than fourteen years over six terms between 1991 and 2016. From 1 January 1988 to 5 December 2016, she was the 5th and longest-serving general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), a Dravidian party whose cadre revered her as their "Amma" (Mother) and "Puratchi Thalaivi".
Vivekanandan Krishnaveni Sasikala, also known by her married name Sasikala Natarajan, and often referred to by her initials VKS, is an Indian politician. She was a close associate of J. Jayalalithaa, the late chief minister of Tamil Nadu, who headed the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) from 1989 until her death in 2016. After Jayalalithaa's death, the party's general council elected her as a temporary secretary general of AIADMK. Before being imprisoned in the Central Prison in Bangalore, Sasikala appointed Edappadi K. Palanisamy as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Palanisamy and other ministers removed her from the post and expelled her from the party in September 2017. Her dismissal was upheld by the Madras High Court in December 2023.
M.G.R. and Amma Memorial, officially Bharat Ratna Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G.R. and Puratchi Thalaivi Amma Selvi J. Jayalalithaa Memorial, is a memorial complex dedicated to the former chief ministers of Tamil Nadu M. G. Ramachandran (M.G.R.) and J. Jayalalithaa (Amma), where a black marble platform was raised on the spot of M.G.R.'s cremation on 25 December 1987, and on the spot of Jayalalithaa's on 6 December 2016. Both cemeteries consist of an eternal flame and a portrait of them at one end. A stone footpath leads to the lotus-shaped wall enclosure that houses the M.G.R. Memorial, with the sword pillar topped with a spherical-shaped dome light, and a stone footpath leads to the phoenix-shaped wall enclosure that houses the memorial of M.G.R.'s protégé and the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalithaa. The memorial complex is located on Kamarajar Promenade, adjacent to the Anna Memorial on the Marina Beach in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Thiru Vi Ka Salai, or the Thiru Vi Ka High Road, is one of the main streets in the downtown region of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Running from north to south, the street branches off of the arterial Anna Salai north of the LIC Building and ends at Luz Corner in Mylapore, continuing as the Ramakrishna Mutt Road. The street connects the neighbourhoods of Royapettah, Mylapore and Gopalapuram. The street includes three individual stretches formerly known as General Patters Road, Westcott Road and Royapettah High Road, respectively. The longest stretch, formerly known as the Royapettah High Road, runs to a length of 1.17 km (0.73 mi). The presence of numerous automobile dealers on the northern end of the street resulted in Chennai coming to be known as The Detroit of India.
