Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) is an Indian institution for open and distance learning established by the government of Tamil Nadu, India. It was founded in 2002 and is based in Chennai.
The university was established by the Legislative Assembly of the government of Tamil Nadu in Act 27 of 2002 to provide access to higher education for those who had been previously unable to pursue it. [1] It opened in 2003, [2] was recognized by the University Grants Commission in September 2015, [3] and is one of five universities approved to offer distance learning outside its state of establishment. [4] As of January 2016 [update] it was one of 14 state open universities in India, which also has one national open university, Indira Gandhi National Open University; [5] as of April 2017 [update] it was one of 111 distance learning institutions in the country. [6] As of December 2017 [update] it offers 113 programmes of study at levels from certificate to post graduate and has 13 academic schools, five support divisions, a media centre and more than 600 learner support centres across Tamil Nadu. [7]
Students are admitted under two admission cycles, calendar year (January to December) and academic year (July to June). They include those living in remote and rural areas, working people, handicapped students, housewives and retirees such as a 67-year-old woman who later completed an MA in history with Madras University, [8] [9] and prisoners. [10]

The University Grants Commission of India is a statutory body set up by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India in accordance to the UGC Act 1956 and is charged with coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education. It provides recognition to universities in India, and disbursements of funds to such recognized universities and colleges. The headquarters are in New Delhi, and it has six regional centres in Pune, Bhopal, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Bangalore. A proposal to replace it with another new regulatory body called HECI is under consideration by the Government of India. The UGC provides doctoral scholarships to all those who clear JRF in the National Eligibility Test. On an average, each year ₹725 crore (US$95 million) is spent on doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships by the commission.

SRM Institute of Science and Technology is a private deemed university located in Kattankulathur, Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, India, near Chennai. It was founded in 1985 as SRM Engineering College in Kattankulathur. Indira Gandhi National Open University, known as IGNOU, is a Central Open Learning University located at Maidan Garhi, New Delhi, India. Named after former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi, the university was established in 1985 with a budget of ₹20 million, after the Parliament of India passed the Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, 1985. IGNOU is run by the central government of India, and with total active enrollment of over 3 million students, claims to be the largest university in the world.

Anna University Tiruchirappalli otherwise Anna University Chennai – Regional Office, BIT CAMPUS, Tiruchirappalli (AUC-ROT), erstwhile Anna University of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, is a technical university department of Anna University, It is located on Tiruchirappalli–Pudukkottai National Highway 336, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established on 1999 as a part of Bharathidasan University with five departments viz., Bio-Technology, Petrochemical Technology, Information Technology and Pharmaceutical Technology. In 2007, due to management constrains Anna University was split into six universities, namely: Anna University, Chennai; Anna University, Chennai – Taramani Campus; Anna University Chennai - Regional Office, Coimbatore; Anna University Chennai - Regional Office, Madurai; Anna University Chennai – Regional Office, Tiruchirappalli; Anna University Chennai - Regional Office, Tirunelveli. Government acquired this campus from Bharathidasan University and renamed it as Anna University Tiruchirappalli in 2007.The university is an accredited university with powers to grant affiliations to colleges and universities conducting graduate and post graduate studies, as well as diploma courses, and is so recognized by the UGC.
Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER) also known as Bharath Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), informally Bharath University, and formerly Bharath Engineering College is a private and deemed university and an Indian institute of higher education located in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, India. It is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the highest grade of A. It is also approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
