List of diplomatic missions in Chennai

This is a list of diplomatic missions in Chennai. Governments of several foreign nations have established diplomatic and trade representation in the city of Chennai. Many of them are at the consulate-general or deputy high commission level, in addition to a number of honorary consulates, with their respective embassies located at New Delhi. The consular presence in the city dates back to 1794, when William Abbott was appointed U.S. consular agent for South India. [1] [2] [3] As of 2022, there were 60 foreign representations in Chennai, [4] including 16 consulates general and 28 honorary consulates. [5] The list is of countries that have established a resident consular presence in the city.

Proposed missions

The agreement for establishing the Consulate General of People's Republic of China in Chennai, the capital city of the state of Tamil Nadu had been signed by the prime minister of India Narendra Modi and Chinese premier Li Keqiang, during Modi's three-day visit to China in May 2015. [61]

In August 2017, Bangladesh government approved the opening of a consulate in Chennai. [62] This will be open before the end of 2019. [63] In addition, the countries of United Arab Emirates, [64] Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and Egypt have decided to open their diplomatic consulates in the city.

Australia is represented in Uruguay through its embassy in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and an honorary consulate in Montevideo. Uruguay has an embassy in Canberra a consulate general in Sydney and honorary consulates in all State capitals.

The Consulate General of the United States of America in Chennai represents the interests of the United States government in Chennai, India and surrounding regions. The consulate reports to the ambassador at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. The current Consul General, the 27th, is Christopher W. Hodges, incumbent since July 2023. He was preceded by Judith Ravin.

The Consulate General of Malaysia for Southern India is one of the three missions of Malaysia in India focusing on Malaysian interests in the region. It is located in Chennai and its jurisdiction includes the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and the union territory of Puducherry. The other two are the Malaysian High Commission in New Delhi and the Consulate General of Malaysia in Mumbai, in addition to an honorary office in Kolkata. The current Consul General of the Chennai Consulate is Saravana Kumar Kumaravasagam.

The Consulate General of Thailand in Chennai is the mission of Thailand in South India representing the interests of the Thai government in the region. The other missions in the country are the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi and the Royal Thai Consulates General in Kolkata and Mumbai. The Chennai Consulate covers the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala. The current Consul General is Nitirooge Phoneprasert. He succeeds Krongkanit Rakcharoen.

The Consulate General of South Korea in Chennai is one of the missions of South Korea in India focusing on Korean interests in the region. It is located in Chennai and its jurisdiction includes the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and the union territory of Puducherry. The other South Korean missions in the India is the Embassy of the Republic of Korea at New Delhi and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Mumbai, in addition to an honorary consulate office in Kolkata. The current consul general of the Chennai Consulate is Kwon Young Seup. He was preceded by Kim Hyung Tae, the second consul general of the Chennai Consulate.
