Mandaveli (also known as Mandavelli or Mandavelipakkam) is a neighborhood in Chennai, India. It is also termed usually as Mandavelipakkam which in the Tamil language "Mandhai" is 'herd of cattle' and "Veli" is 'grassland'.

Location

Mandaveli is located close to the locality of Mylapore. It is bordered by Mylapore in the north, Santhome (and MRC Nagar) in the east and RA Puram in the south and in the west. It derives its name from a literal translation with reference to the rearing of cows "mandhai" meaning - "herd" and " Veli" which means open space in Tamil. On the west side it is surrounded by Alwarpet. Mandaveli is predominantly a residential area with the main "landmarks" being the 150-year-old Kapali talkies, the Airtel regional office of Tamil Nadu, the Ponds regional head office, Hindustan Lever, and others like Greenways road & boat club. Due to its proximity to the temple dense Mylapore, Mandaveli is home to a large number of Brahmins. Mandavelipakkam is seen as a residential and business area located between Santhome (which is home to the San Thome Basilica) to the north and Adyar to its south. St. John's high school is a prominent educational institutions in this area. Mandaveli MRTS station is built on the MRTS railway line which connects it to Chennai central beach station at the north end and Velachery to the south. Several old buildings are being demolished to make way for newer structures like the Kabali Theatre, which is located near Mandaveli bus stand has been changed into a big apartment. And some other residential buildings also have been changed for business structures.

To the east is Karpagam Avenue — a mostly residential area which is home to the India Cements Towers. [1] Opposite Karpagam Avenue is Mayor Ramanathan Chettiar Nagar (MRC Nagar). This is a newly developing huge area beside the beach. Big corporations and five star hotels have set up office here. The Sun TV Network (located in the Murasoli Maran Towers), [2] TVH Bellicia Tower, The India Cements Building and iconic Mayor Ramanathan Chettiar Marriage Hall [3] and Conference Centre are a few important buildings located here. The JW Marriott Hotel [4] and Leela Palace Hotel [5] are some of the notable landmarks.

San Thome Church, is known as St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica and National Shrine of Saint Thomas, is a Catholic minor basilica in the Santhome neighbourhood of the city of Madras (Chennai), in Tamil Nadu, India. The present structure dates to 1523 AD, when it was built by the Portuguese, over the tomb of Thomas the Apostle, one of the apostles of Jesus. In 1896, it was rebuilt in British Madras according to Neo-Gothic style, as was favoured by British architects in the late 19th century. This church is one of the three known churches in the world built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus that are still standing today, the other two being St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia, Spain. In antiquity, there was a basilica built over the tomb of the Apostle Philip in Hierapolis of Phrygia, near modern day Pamukkale.

Thoraipakkam also spelt Thuraipakkam, also known as Okkiyam Thuraipakkam or Oggiyamduraipakkam, is an area of Chennai, India. It is one of the stops on what is called as the IT expressway, on Old Mahabalipuram Road, now known as Rajiv Gandhi Salai, the first six lane road in Chennai. Okkiyam Thoraipakkam is on the eastern banks of the Pallikaranai marsh which has been designated as a reserve forest area and is one of the few remaining significant natural ecosystems within Chennai. Thoraipakkam is 3 km in length, starting from Perungudi to its north. It is located exactly in the middle of the OMR Road.

Alwarpet is a residential zone in central Chennai and is a part of the greater Teynampet region. It is Surrounded by Teynampet in the North and East, Mylapore, Mandaveli and Abhiramapuram in the East, Raja Annamalaipuram in the South, Nandanam in the South-West. It is some of the most upscale neighborhoods in Chennai. The Geographical location of this area allows centralized access to all part of the city, Hence it is typically called as "Heart of Chennai". The Central Railway station is about 7km and Chennai International Airport is around 11 km. The nearest Metro station is Teynampet metro station. A new exclusive station for Alwarpet has been proposed under the Phase -II of Chennai Metro Rail Project which is likely to being by Mar 2021 and expected to be completed within 5-7 years.

The Leela Palace Chennai Luxury hotel in Chennai, India

The Leela Palace Chennai is a 326-room five star deluxe hotel in Chennai, India. It is located at MRC Nagar, Raja Annamalaipuram, in the Adyar Creek area in the southern end of the Marina Beach. The hotel is designed by Atlanta-based architects Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart and Associates, Inc. and is themed after the Chettinad architecture of Tamil Nadu. With the project cost exceeding 8,000 million, the hotel was expected to open in September 2012. However, delays in construction and operation preparation have pushed its inaugural date to January 2013.

Thirumayilai railway station

Thirumayilai MRTS station also known as Mylapore MRTS station is a railway station on the Chennai MRTS line. It was started in 1997 which marked the completion of Phase I of the Chennai MRTS project. The station is located on the bank of Buckingham Canal, accessible from Ramakrishna Mutt road near Luz Corner. The Station building also comprises the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) office and Southern Railway's Computerized Ticket Reservation Centre. The Station building consists of 1050 sq.m of parking area in its basement.

Indira Nagar is a railway station on the Chennai MRTS. Located opposite the Institute of Chemical Technology on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR), it exclusively serves the Chennai MRTS. The station can also be accessed through canal bank road, Indira Nagar.

Mundakakanniamman Koil station is a railway station on the Chennai MRTS, located near Brindavan Street and Mundakakanni Amman Koil Street in Mylapore, along the Buckingham Canal. The station exclusively serves the Chennai MRTS, and serves the neighbourhood of northern Mylapore, Santhome and Royapettah.
