Programme

Undergraduate Programmes

TNNLU currently offers two ‘five year integrated undergraduate law programmes’ approved by the BCI i.e., B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and B.Com. LL.B.(Hons.). This regular, full-time and rigorous residential programme is based on semester pattern. It is spread through ten semesters which encompasses wide range of activities including research projects, moot court exercises, inter-disciplinary lectures and compulsory internships besides the regular classes and exams.

Five years integrated B.A.LL.B. (Hons.)

The five year B.A. LL.B.(Honours) programme, commenced in 2012, is designed to train the students in law and other social sciences using an interdisciplinary approach, to enable them to become legal professionals with sound understanding of policy implications. While the prime focus in the first two years is on the other social sciences, the students are required to complete a minimum number of law courses. This further enriches the interdisciplinary approach as knowledge of other disciplines informs the understanding, inter alia, of the various law courses. In addition to the BCI compulsory courses, clinical courses, optional/elective and seminar courses in law, the students may choose various elective courses offered by faculty of Commerce, Accountancy etc.

Five years integrated B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.)

The five-year B.Com. LL.B.(Honours) programme was commenced in 2013. This programme is in pursuit of expanding the interdisciplinary study of law and fulfils the aspirations of students in widening the scope of the enquiry to commerce, accountancy and business disciplines through these courses. At the same time, apart from the BCI mandated courses, clinical courses, optional/elective and seminar courses in law, the students are required to complete a minimum number of courses offered to the B.A. LL.B. Honours programme in the same spirit of interdisciplinary study of law like Legal History, Political Science, Economics and Sociology. Based on interest, elective courses offered by faculty from other disciplines may also be chosen. The courses of the above programmes are designed in such a way that those who didn’t study courses relating to Social Sciences, Commerce or Accountancy in Classes XI and XII will get adequate foundation through the introductory classes and will be able to develop the background knowledge needed to pursue these courses through their undergraduate programmes.

Bachelor of Civil Law is the name of various degrees in law conferred by English-language universities. The BCL originated as a postgraduate degree in the universities of Oxford and Cambridge; at Oxford, the BCL continues to be the primary postgraduate taught course in law. It is also taught as an undergraduate degree in other countries. The reference to civil law was not originally in contradistinction to common law, but to canon law, although common law was not taught in the civil law faculties in either university until at least the second half of the 18th century. However, some universities in English-speaking countries use the degree in the former sense.

Legal education Education in topics related to law

Legal education is the education of individuals in the principles, practices, and theory of law. It may be undertaken for several reasons, including to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for admission to legal practice in a particular jurisdiction, to provide a greater breadth of knowledge to those working in other professions such as politics or business, to provide current lawyers with advanced training or greater specialisation, or to update lawyers on recent developments in the law.

A Bachelor of Laws is an undergraduate law degree offered in most common law countries as the primary law degree and serves as the first professional qualification for legal practitioners. This degree requires the study of core legal subjects and jurisprudence to provide a comprehensive understanding of the legal system and its function. The LLB curriculum is designed to impart a thorough knowledge of legal principles, legal research skills, and a sound understanding of the roles and responsibilities of lawyers within society. This degree is often a prerequisite for taking bar exams or qualifying as a practising lawyer, depending on the jurisdiction. Additionally, the LLB program also serves as a foundation for further legal education, such as a Master of Laws (LLM) or other postgraduate studies in law.

A Master of Laws is an advanced postgraduate academic degree, pursued by those either holding an undergraduate academic law degree, a professional law degree, or an undergraduate degree in a related subject. In most jurisdictions, the LL.M. is the advanced professional degree for those usually already admitted into legal practice.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Laws is an intensive one-year, full-time professional legal qualification programme in Hong Kong. The programme is similar to the Legal Practice Course or the Bar Professional Training Course in England and Wales, or the Certificate in Legal Practice (Malaysia) in Malaysia which focuses heavily on practical and procedural issues in legal practice, unlike a first degree in law.
