Himachal Pradesh National Law University Shimla (HPNLU Shimla) is an Indian public law school and a National Law University located in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. [1] It is the 20th National Law University established in India. NLU Shimla is governed by the High Court of Himachal Pradesh. [2]

History

The Himachal Pradesh National Law University(HPNLU) Shimla, was established by the State Government in the year 2016, by an Act of the Legislature (Act 16 of 2016). The University started functioning from October 5, 2016. The University inducts students through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) for its Undergraduate (UG) programme, which includes B.A.LL.B. and B.B.A.LL.B.-Hons. (Five-Year Integrated Course) and the Post-graduate(PG) programme for one-year LL.M. The PG programme provides four specializations viz, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law & Forensic Studies, Business Law and Intellectual Property Rights. The University also offers Doctor of Philosophy(Ph.D.) and Post-Doctorate Programmes (LL.D.) in Law. [3]

In November 2022, some 70 female students at HPNLU wrote a letter alleging sexual harassment for one of the professors, Aayush Raj. [4] They also complained about exams administered in mid-2020 despite this being the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as other issues such as mental abuse and lack of amenities. [4]

Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Medical College (YSPGMC) Nahan is medical college located in Nahan, Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh. It is a renowned medical institution established in 2016 as a third medical college in Himachal Pradesh followed by IGMC Indra Gandhi Medical College, Shimla and RPGMC,Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Kangra. YSPGMC, college is named after first Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar.

The Government College Chamba generally known as Government Post Graduate College, Chamba at Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, India was established in 1958. The college is affiliated to Sardar Patel University Mandi, Shimla and has switched to Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for Under Graduate classes from academic session 2013-14 under the guidelines of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). Nishtha Jaswal is an academician and scholar in Law. In 2024, she retired as the Vice Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla. She was the second Vice-Chancellor of HPNLU, Shimla and the third woman Vice Chancellor at a National Law University. She served as the Vice Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla from November 2018 till January 2024.
