The Bihta Air Force Station is an Indian Air Force (IAF) base in Bihta, Bihar, India. [1] The military airfield, lies 40 kilometres southwest of state capital Patna and is spread over an area of around 900 acres. [2] [3]

Civilian Operations

In 2016, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) proposed to develop a civil enclave at the Bihta airbase to serve as a second airport for Patna. The Indian Air Force gave its consent in April 2016 for commercial flight operations from Bihta as a medium-term measure for development air operations from Patna. [4] The terminal building of the civil enclave will have the capacity to cater up to 2.5 million passengers per annum. It will be two-storied, with the ground floor for arrival and first floor for the departure of passengers. [5] The Khagaul-Shivala-Bihta road, which will be broadened to four lanes, will connect the airport with the city. AAI had earlier estimated a requirement of 600 acres of land for the first Phase and another 790 acres for the second Phase in lieu of the existing Jayprakash Narayan International Airport in Patna. [6]

In October 2016, the Bihar cabinet approved the Patna master plan for 2031 which envisaged development of a new airport at Bihta. [7] [8] The Bihar government identified 126 acres of land at Vishambharpur and Kutlupur to be used for construction of the civil enclave. [9] In November 2016, the Bihar cabinet approved a budget of ₹260 crore for the acquisition of 126 acres of land for the project. [10] [11] [12]

The AAI and State Government approved the civil enclave design in July 2019, with construction expected to begin by the end of 2019. The first phase entails a two-storied building covering an area of 25,000 square metres. The civil enclave is expected to be ready by 2022 and will cost more than ₹500 crores. In the first phase, the terminal building will be equipped with five aerobridges and parking bays for five aircraft. In the next phase, the terminal area will be doubled to 50,000 square metres with five additional aerobridges and five additional parking bays. Of the 126 acres of land acquired by the State Government near Bihta airbase, 108 acres will be used by AAI to build the civil enclave while the remaining 18 acres will be used by the State Government for development of amenities, including a VIP lounge, a hotel and a hangar. [13] [5] Bihar government transferred 108-acre land to the AAI for Bihta civil enclave. The built-up area of the terminal building at Bihta would be approximately 50,000 sq metres. Over Rs 350 crore is estimated to be spent on the project. Once completed, Bihta airport will have the capacity to handle 2.5 million passengers per annum (MPA). [14]

The Bihar government acquired 120 acres of land for construction of the new airport. [15] [16] The Bihar cabinet approved a budget of Rs 260 crore for the acquisition of 126 acres for the Bihta airport, which was scheduled to be completed by October 2019. [17] [18] [19] Of the 126 acres - 99 acres in Vishambhar and 27 acres in Kultupur - property from about 400 land owners was acquired for the new airport. [20] [21] An elevated expressway from Saguna Mor to Bihta is going to be constructed. [22] Of the 120 acres of acquired land for Bihta Airport, 108 acres will be utilised for development of a civil enclave and the remaining 12 acres for development of amenities, including a VIP lounge, a hotel and a hangar. [23]

The Airport Authority had proposed transfer of 156 acres of land to the state government, apart from 128 acres which the state government is to transfer, so that the length of the runway can be increased to 12000 feet. [24] In addition, an advanced category-II Instrument Landing System (ILS) will be installed at the new airport so that flights can land there at a visibility as low as 350 m. [25]

Patna Metro (Patna MRTS) is a rapid transit system being constructed in the city of Patna, India. Construction will be completed over five phases, and the transit system would be owned and operated by the state-run Patna Metro Rail Corporation. In the first phase, five stations of Patna Metro will be operational by March 2025. Patna MRTS, constructed under a public-private partnership model, is estimated to cost ₹133,657.7 million (US$1.7 billion). Danapur is connected to metropolitan areas of India by the Delhi–Kolkata main line via Mughalsarai–Patna route. It is in Khagaul city about 6 km from Danapur Cantonment, in Patna district in the Indian state of Bihar.

Karwar Airport is a proposed airport and will be built by the Indian Navy at Alageri village near Ankola in Karnataka. The naval air station is expected to start functioning in 2025.

Bihta is a town and Block in Patna district, Bihar state, India. Bihta is part of Maner Assembly constituency and Pataliputra Lok Sabha constituency. It is located around 30 km (19 mi) west of Patna. Bihta is also an upcoming satellite town of Patna. It lies 7 km (4.3 mi) from Bihta railway station.

Patna Regional Development Authority abbreviated as PRDA, is a body of the Government of Bihar that is responsible for the infrastructure development of the Patna Metropolitan Region (PMR). It was established by the Bihar State Government with the sole purpose of the developing the infrastructure of the Patna Metropolitan Region. After Enactment of Bihar Municipal Act 2007, it is now merged into Patna Municipal Corporation.

Patliputra Junction, Station code (PPTA), is a railway station in the Rukanpura area in the West End of Patna, Bihar. The station, which is governed by East Central Railway and managed by Danapur railway division, lies on the Patna–Sonepur–Hajipur section. Located 12 kilometres north-west of Patna Junction, it has primarily been developed to ease pressure on the city's other two railway stations, through which roughly 350 trains pass daily. It is located near Bailey Road, an important western thoroughfare in Patna. Patliputra junction has become the fourth terminal of the Danapur railway division after Patna Junction, Danapur station and Rajendranagar Terminal.

The entire region has an estimated population of 3,874,000 over an area of 1,167.04 km². The Government of Bihar notified this area on 13 August 2014, replacing PRDA area, which included Hajipur in Vaishali district and Sonpur in Saran district.

The foundation stone for the airport was laid by the then Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, and the then Civil Aviation Minister, Suresh Prabhu, in the presence of the State Civil Aviation Minister, Jayant Sinha, on 24 December 2018. After efforts taken by the then Civil Aviation Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri. Commercial flights started on 8 November 2020.

Danapur-Bihta Elevated Road is a proposed elevated road in Bihar. The 21 km road will be four-lane and is claimed to be the longest elevated road in East India. The road will have a 600-metre-long tunnel for entry of vehicles in the proposed civil enclave at Bihta Air Force Station. The project also proposed construction of ramps at four places- Danapur, Shivala Mor, Bihta airport link and Bihta-Sarmera bypass. The road will connect Patna to Bihta Airport via the Danapur railway station and Shivala Chowk.
