No. 81 Squadron is a unit of the Indian Air Force assigned to Western Air Command. The Squadron participates in operations involving air, land and airdrop of troops, equipment, supplies, and support or augment special operations forces, when appropriate. It is responsible for heavy lift operations of the IAF and is based out of the Hindan Air Force Station. The squadron operates 11 Boeing C-17 Globemaster IIIs.

History

First C-17 was delivered in January 2013 and the sixth C-17 aircraft was received in July 2014. [1] Boeing delivered 11th and last aircraft in August 2019. [2] It was constituted as No. 81 Squadron (Sky Lords) on 1 September 2013 [3]

Operations

The squadron is the workhorse of any operation that require heavy lift for the Indian Armed Forces or the Government of India. It has been deployed in vast number of varied scenarios that include transportation of oxygen tanks to India during the medical oxygen shortage in India caused by Covid. [4] The Sky Lords carried out rapid troop deployment by India in Ladakh during the 2020-21 border India-China standoff. [4] The 81st Squadron has also carried out evacuation of Indians and foreign nationals from volatile regions during uncertain situations. These include the 2015 Yemen crises, [5] [6] rescue and relief sorties to Nepal during April 2015 Nepal earthquake, [7] evacuation of Indians from war torn South Sudan in 2016. [8] It also airlifted Indians, many Afghan MPs, Afghan Sikhs and Hindus, and the staff of Indian embassy in Afghanistan after Taliban took over Kabul following US troop pullout. [9] It has also had foreign deployments to Tajikistan in August 2013, and to Rwanda to support Indian peacekeepers. [10] The squadron has carried out numerous other humanitarian and military operations.

17th Airlift Squadron Military unit

The 17th Airlift Squadron was most recently one of four active duty Boeing C-17A Globemaster III units at Charleston Air Force Base, South Carolina. The squadron was first activated during World War II as the 17th Air Corps Ferrying Squadron, redesignating as the 17th Transport Squadron a few months later. Until disbanding in 1943, it transported cargo and ferried aircraft in the Pacific.

Air Force Station Hindan is an Indian Air Force base under the Western Air Command (WAC). It is the biggest and largest air base in Asia. Its area measured 14 km rounded and 55 square kilometres (21 sq mi). This base celebrates Air Force Day on 8 October. It is located near Loni Ghaziabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh in the National Capital Region on the outskirts of Delhi, close to the Hindan River. Starting 2006, the annual Air Force Day Parade venue was shifted from Palam Airport to Hindan. There is one runway, aligned east–west (09-27), of 9,000 feet (2,700 m) length x 150 feet (46 m) width. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) operates a civil enclave at Hindan as part of the government's Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS).

Boeing C-17 Globemaster III in Australian service History of the C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft used by Australia

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) operates eight Boeing C-17 Globemaster III large transport aircraft. Four C-17s were ordered in mid-2006 to improve the ability of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to operate outside Australia and its region. The aircraft entered service between November 2006 and January 2008, the second pair being delivered ahead of schedule. Two more Globemasters were ordered in 2011, the sixth being delivered to the RAAF in November 2012. Another two C-17s were ordered in October 2014, with the final aircraft being delivered in November 2015. The Globemasters are built to the same specifications as those operated by the United States Air Force (USAF), and the Australian aircraft are maintained through an international contract with Boeing.

Operation Pitting was a British military operation to evacuate British nationals and eligible Afghans from Afghanistan following the 2021 Taliban offensive. The operation consisted of more than 1,000 military personnel, including soldiers from 16 Air Assault Brigade. It ran concurrently with the evacuation efforts of numerous other countries.

Operation Devi Shakti was an operation of the Indian Armed Forces to evacuate Indian citizens and foreign nationals from Afghanistan after the collapse of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the fall of Kabul, the capital city, to the Taliban.
