Cherry Box is an unincorporated community in northwestern Shelby County, Missouri, United States. [1] The community is on Missouri Route B 3.5 miles northwest of Leonard. The North Fork of the Salt River flows past two miles to the west of the community. [2]
Cherry Box was founded in the 1850s by a colony of German Mennonites. [3] It is uncertain why the name "Cherry Box" was applied to this community, although a few traditions exist. [4] A post office called Cherry Box was established in 1858, and remained in operation until 1943. [5]
Shelby County is a county located in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,103. Its county seat is Shelbyville. The county was established on January 2, 1835, and named for Governor Isaac Shelby of Kentucky.
