The Chief Dental Officer is an official position created by the Government of Canada to improve the oral health status of Canadians and to increase awareness about the prevention of oral diseases. They report to the Assistant Deputy Minister of the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch and to the deputy minister of health. The first chief dental officer was Peter Cooney. This position was established in 2004.

Lorne Kusugak is a Canadian politician, who is Member of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut for the electoral district of Rankin Inlet South. Prior to becoming an MLA, Kusugak was the mayor of Rankin Inlet. Kusugak served as the Nunavut Minister for Community and Government Services, Minister for Energy and the Minister responsible for the Qulliq Energy Corporation.

He was the Acting Surgeon General from January to May 1981 under Ronald Reagan. He was the highest ranking non-physician public health officer in the history of the U.S. government.
Shan K. Bagby is a United States Army brigadier general and the 28th Chief of the Army Dental Corps. Bagby also serves as the Commanding General, Regional Health Command-Central. Bagby, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, was the Army’s first African-American dental officer promoted to brigadier general.
Arlington Franklin Dungy was a Canadian dentist who practiced in Ontario, and was a known advocate for a more inclusive medical community. He specialized in paediatric dentistry, and practiced first in Toronto, before accepting the role of chief of dentistry at Ottawa's Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. His academic career included the positions of dean of alumni and student affairs and associate dean of professional affairs, at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine. During his tenure at the University of Ottawa, he co-founded the Indigenous admissions program, as well as two scholarships, to address a lack of Indigenous representation within the Canadian medical profession. He was fondly known as "Arlie" by people close to him.
