Chief of Protocol is a government official in a number of countries. A chief of protocol typically facilitates official trips to other countries and visits by foreign dignitaries. They may also be involved in a number of other matters, such as accreditation, courtesies, privileges, and immunities for foreign diplomats.

Chief of Protocol of the United States U.S. government position

In the United States, the chief of protocol is an officer of the United States Department of State responsible for advising the president of the United States, the vice president, and the secretary of state on matters of national and international diplomatic protocol. The chief of protocol holds the rank of Ambassador and Assistant Secretary of State. Cam Henderson has served as Chief of Protocol since August 2019.

Sean Lawler U.S. Diplomat

Sean P. Lawler served as Chief of Protocol of the United States from December 2017 until June 2019, when he was suspended indefinitely as result of an investigation into his conduct. Prior to assuming that role, he was a master chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy and was the director for Visits, Planning, and Diplomatic Affairs at the National Security Council. Before that, he led the Office of Visits and Protocol at the U.S. Cyber Command in Fort Meade, Maryland. A veteran with more than 20 years of service in the U.S. Navy, Lawler capped his military service as the Director of Administration at the Naval Support Facility Thurmont in Thurmont, Maryland. Earlier, he was the Administrative Department Leading Chief Petty Officer and Ship's Secretary on the USS John C. Stennis and he was an Executive Assistant to the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Mary-Kate Fisher is an American diplomat who served as Acting Chief of Protocol of the United States from June 24, 2019, to August 12, 2019. She previously served as Assistant Chief of Protocol for Visits.
