Coco & Clair Clair are an American pop rap duo from suburban Atlanta, Georgia, founded by Taylor Nave and Claire Toothill in late 2013. Their debut album, Sexy, was released in November 2022.
Claire Toothill met Taylor Nave, on Twitter in late 2013, [1] Both Toothill and Nave were born and raised in the suburbs outside of Atlanta, GA. [2] They released the track on SoundCloud and shortly after, decided to pursue music together professionally. [3]
In 2017, they released their debut project, P.O.S.H. Shortly after, Toothill moved to New York City [4] but the duo continued working on music. In the same year, they released the singles "Pretty", [5] which later became successful on TikTok, [6] and “Crushcrushcrush”. [7]
In September 2019, they appeared alongside Clairo on Deaton Chris Anthony's track "Racecar" for which a music video was released. [8] During the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, Toothill moved back to Atlanta and Nave graduated from college, [9] which allowed the duo to focus on music full-time. In April 2020, they released their second EP, Treat Like Gold, [10] [11] which includes the track "Wishy Washy", for which a music video was released in September 2020. [12] In October 2022, the song was used in the fifth episode of the fourth season of Atlanta. [13]
Between 2020 and 2021, the duo continued to release a handful of singles and provide features for other artists. "Pop Star", an ode to life as a musician, [14] was released in December 2020 followed by “TBTF" in September 2021. [15] In February 2022, they featured on Lewis OfMan's "Misbehave", which Billboard likened to a version of Kesha's "Tik Tok" shot in the Emily in Paris universe, and which appeared on OfMan's album Sonic Poems, which was released in the same day. In September of 2022, the pair announced their debut album Sexy with the release of their single "Cherub". [17] The following month, they released the album's second single "Love Me". [18] In November 2022, they released the twelve-track album Sexy, [19] which featured "Pop Star", "TBTF", "Cherub", "Love Me", and "The Hills (feat. Deela)". [20] The album received positive reviews. [21] Pitchfork gave the album a 7.4, noting that Coco & Clair Clair coalesce and subvert trends with ease. [22] In November of 2023, they released a deluxe version of the album that featureds dremixes of each track from artists like Empress Of, Chaeyoung from the K-pop group Twice, and George Daniel of The 1975. In the entertainment industry, sleeper hit refers to a film, television series, music release, video game, or other entertainment product that was unpromising on release but became a surprise success. A sleeper hit may have little promotion or lack a successful launch but gradually develops a fandom following media attention, which in turn increases its public exposure and public interest in the product. As Variety puts it, "A 'sleeper hit' can be defined as the kind of show that catches us by surprise—programs whose popularity grows over time and can ultimately outshine the preordained hits." A sleeper hit often lacks star performers or high production values, but prevails, at times against its own makers' expectations, on the strength of such qualities as narrative, approach, or novelty, as well as market accidents. Sleeper hit films benefit theater owners because the owners keep a larger percentage of money from ticket sales.
