Those two genres were separated into their own awards categories in 2016, resulting in the current award designation.

The 23rd Costume Designers Guild Awards, honoring the best costume designs in film, television, and media for 2020, was held on April 13, 2021. The nominees were announced on March 4, 2021.

The 25th Costume Designers Guild Awards, honoring excellence in film, television, and short form costume design for 2022, were held on February 27, 2023, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The nominees were announced on January 12, 2023. The ceremony was hosted by Tituss Burgess. Special honors were awarded to Angela Bassett, Bette Midler, and costume designers Deborah L. Scott and Rachael M. Stanley.

The 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards, honoring excellence in film, television, and short form costume design for 2023, were held on February 21, 2024, at NeueHouse Hollywood in Los Angeles. The nominations were announced on January 4, 2024.

The Costume Designers Guild Award for Outstanding Made for Television Movie or Mini-Series was awarded from 2005 until 2014. Since CDG awards inception in 1998 and from 2015 onwards, miniseries and television films were recognized in separate specific categories for contemporary, period, and sci-fi/fantasy television.
