Daniel Rivera is an American businessman and politician. He is the 59th mayor of Lawrence, Massachusetts, having held office since January 4, 2014.

Lawrence is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States, on the Merrimack River. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 76,377, which had risen to an estimated 78,197 as of 2014. Surrounding communities include Methuen to the north, Andover to the southwest, and North Andover to the southeast. Lawrence and Salem were the county seats of Essex County, until the Commonwealth abolished county government in 1999. Lawrence is part of the Merrimack Valley.

Early life and education

Dan was born in The Bronx to a single mother who emigrated from the Dominican Republic. His family moved to Lawrence when he was five years old. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1989. [2] After high school Dan joined the United States Army and was a Military Police Officer in Germany. He was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Upon his return home, Dan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Master's degree in Business Administration from Suffolk University. Gulf War 1990–1991 war between Iraq and Coalition Forces

The Gulf War, codenamed Operation Desert Shield for operations leading to the buildup of troops and defense of Saudi Arabia and Operation Desert Storm in its combat phase, was a war waged by coalition forces from 35 nations led by the United States against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait arising from oil pricing and production disputes. The war is also known under other names, such as the Persian Gulf War, First Gulf War, Gulf War I, Kuwait War, First Iraq War or Iraq War, before the term "Iraq War" became identified instead with the post-2003 Iraq War.

Political Career

Rivera served on the Lawrence City Council from 2010 to 2014. He was elected Mayor of Lawrence in 2013, and took office on January 4th, 2014 with Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren administering the oath of office. [15] [16] [17]

City Council

Rivera previously served as an At Large City Councilor. He was elected Vice President of the Council during his second term and has chaired the Budget and Finance Committee for the past three years. Rivera is a member of the Board of Trustees for Northern Essex Community College where he plays a supporting role in the expansion of the College's Lawrence Campus.

Northern Essex Community College (NECC) is a public community college in Essex County, Massachusetts. The college serves residents of the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire. It has campuses in Haverhill and Lawrence. The college is part of the Massachusetts Higher Education system. More than 6,600 students are enrolled in 70 credit associate degree and certificate programs and another 3,400 take noncredit workforce development and community education classes on campus, and at businesses and community sites across the Merrimack Valley.


Gas Explosion

Improperly maintained gas lines led to a gas explosion in Lawrence on Septemer 13th 2018 damaging many commercial building and residences. As the Mayor of Lawrence Dan Rivera assisted in emergency relief and recovery operations.Mayor Rivera also sought and helped to receive a settlement for the injured parties and the city of Lawrence. 1907 Boston mayoral election

The Boston mayoral election of 1907 occurred on Tuesday, December 10, 1907. Republican candidate George A. Hibbard defeated Democratic candidate John F. Fitzgerald, the incumbent Mayor of Boston, and John A. Coulthurst, an Independence League candidate. Primary elections for each party had been held on Thursday, November 14, 1907.

On September 13, 2018, excessive pressure in natural gas lines owned by Columbia Gas of Massachusetts caused a series of explosions and fires to occur in as many as 40 homes, with over 80 individual fires, in the Merrimack Valley, Massachusetts towns of Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover. One person was killed and 30,000 were forced to evacuate their homes.
