Danny O'Connor (born 28 September 1980, Dublin) is an Irish footballer who retired in June 2014 as Club Captain of Bray Wanderers. O'Connor primarily played as a central defender or in central midfield. His brothers James O'Connor and Kevin O'Connor also had extensive footballing careers.

Danny started his League of Ireland career at Bray Wanderers in 1999 and spent two seasons at the Carlisle Grounds before moving to Drogheda United at the start of the 2001/02 season. Danny made 123 league appearances in four seasons at United Park and scored eight goals. His most memorable goal was on 8 February 2003 when he scored the winning goal in the relegation playoff against Galway United to keep Drogheda in the top division. His extra time goal at United Park was Drogheda's third of the match, which overturned the 2-0 defeat they had suffered in the first leg. [1]

In January 2005 Danny signed for Longford Town and spent two seasons at Flancare Park, making 58 league appearances and scoring two league goals. He also scored against Cork City in the second round of the FAI Cup in 2006, though Longford went out of the competition at the quarter-final stage to St Patrick's Athletic. [2]

O'Connor departed Longford Town at the end of the 2006 season to join newly promoted Shamrock Rovers. He made his Rovers debut at UCD on the opening day of the 2007 season. [3] O'Connor scored his only Rovers goal in a 2-0 derby victory over Bohemians in September that year. [4] He departed Shamrock Rovers at the end of the 2008 season and following a brief spell out of the game he joined IFA Premiership side Newry City for the 2009/10 season. [5]

Danny left Rovers at the end of the 2008 season and spent some time out of the game before joining Irish League side Newry City F.C. at the start of the 2009/10 season. He made 11 league appearances with Newry but in July 2010 O'Connor returned to Bray Wanderers. He was appointed Club Captain there, but following a series of injuries he retired from football in June 2014. [6]

The club also competed in the FAI Cup, League of Ireland Cup and the Leinster Senior Cup. Dundalk finished the 33-round season in 11th position, requiring them to play a promotion/relegation play-off against Waterford United of the First Division; a tie which they won on aggregate, thus retaining their place in the Premier Division for the 2013 season. Results against Monaghan United F.C. were expunged, after they withdrew from the League mid-season.

The 2014 season was St. Patrick's Athletic F.C.'s 85th year in existence and was their 63rd consecutive season in the League of Ireland top division. It was the third year that Liam Buckley is the team's manager, following replacing Pete Mahon in December 2011. The Saints finished the previous season as the 2013 champions. The season was very successful on the field as the Saints began by winning the inaugural President's Cup and the Leinster Senior Cup. The biggest triumph of all however was when top scorer Christy Fagan wrote himself into the club's history books by scoring twice in a 2–0 win over Derry City in the 2014 FAI Cup Final, ending a 53-year hoodoo with the cup for the club. Pats also competed in the UEFA Champions League, the Setanta Cup and the League of Ireland Cup.

The League of Ireland B Division is a former league within the Republic of Ireland football league system. Its debut season was 1964–65. It was originally a second level league. However following the emergence of the League of Ireland First Division in 1985–86 it became a third level league. Like the later A Championship, the League of Ireland B included a mixture of League of Ireland reserve teams and the first teams of emerging clubs. There was no relegation and promotion to and from the senior League of Ireland division. However a number of B Division teams, including Home Farm, Athlone Town, UCD, Longford Town and Monaghan United, were subsequently elected to the senior division.
