Evelyn Magruder DeJarnette was an American author, who wrote stories in African-American dialect.

Joseph Spencer DeJarnette was the director of Western State Hospital from 1905 to November 15, 1943. He was a vocal proponent of racial segregation and eugenics, specifically, the compulsory sterilization of the mentally ill.

DeJarnette's Tavern, also sometimes called DeJarnette House, Daniel DeJarnette Tavern, or Staunton River Hunt Club, is a nationally registered historic place near Nathalie, Halifax County, Virginia. This wooden structure with stone foundations and chimneys was built in the late eighteenth century, perhaps about 1780, and consists of one and one-half stories, with a supra-attic and cellar. Most of the first floor was occupied by a large tavern room.

Racial Integrity Act of 1924

On 20 March 1924, the Virginia General Assembly successfully passed two laws that had arisen out of concerns about eugenics and race: SB 219 entitled "The Racial Integrity Act." To put it better in context, there were no other laws in the State of Virginia or in other states that formally tackled this issue, and thus its importance in United States history. With respect to its relation with eugenics, the passing of this Act was also influenced by the Virginia Sterilization Act of 1924 for which, according to the PBS American Experience documentary "The Eugenics Crusade," this was due to the number of cases reported that doctors evaluated where they found other genetic traits that are also found in what they perceived at the time as other races - African Americans or Native Americans in particular.

The Virginia State Colony for Epileptics and Feebleminded opened in 1910 as the Virginia State Colony for Epileptics near Lynchburg, Virginia in Madison Heights. It was renamed Lynchburg State Colony in 1940 and Lynchburg Training School and Hospital in 1954. Since 1983 it has been the Central Virginia Training Center.

Spring Grove is a historic home located at Oak Corner, Caroline County, Virginia. It was built in 1856, and is an Italian Villa style dwelling built for Daniel Coleman DeJarnette, Sr. (1822-1881) on a plantation that had been owned by the DeJarnette family, French Huguenot immigrants to Virginia, since 1740. The 26 room, 12,000 square foot mansion is the third house to occupy the site.

The LaGrange Rock Shelter is an archaeological site located on private property between Leighton and Muscle Shoals in Colbert County, Alabama near the original campus of LaGrange College.
