Dean L. Howes Jr. (born October 7, 1952) is an American businessman in the field of sports management. He was the first commissioner of Major League Rugby which began its inaugural season in 2018. [1] [2]

A former partner in SCP Worldwide, Howes was previously chief executive of Real Salt Lake, a member of Major League Soccer. [3] Howes was also, with SCP Worldwide, a managing partner of National Hockey League franchise St. Louis Blues. [3]

Early career

Howes began with pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) in a 19-year business career spanning New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, [3] rising to the position of Senior Director of Business Development.[ citation needed ] He left BMS in 1997 to become CEO and founding executive of Professional Teams Physicians. The company grew to represent over a thousand sports medicine practitioners around the country, across professional teams in the NBA, MLB, NFL, MLS and NHL. [3]

Sports management

Howes became a partner in SCP Worldwide (Sports Capital Partners), a New York City-based sports, entertainment and media company founded in 2002. Howes and SCP Worldwide were managing partners of National Hockey League (NHL) team St. Louis Blues and their home arena the Savvis Center (since renamed the Scottrade Center). [3]

He was appointed chief executive of the Real Salt Lake soccer franchise, a Major League Soccer (MLS) team owned by SCP playing in Salt Lake City, Utah. He later served as the vice-chairman and oversaw the construction of Rio Tinto Stadium, the 20,000-seat home of Real Salt Lake in Sandy, Utah. [3]

Howes played a role in making Real Salt Lake the first U.S. professional sports team to sell the naming rights to the front of their jerseys. This sparked a trend throughout the MLS, in which now all teams have followed suit with front jersey sponsors.[ citation needed ]

In 2014, Howes partnered with Findlay Entertainment in their bid to bring another major sports franchise to the Las Vegas market. [4] He joined the executive management team of Rugby Utah in 2016, [3] before being appointed as the commissioner of Major League Rugby ahead of the competition's inaugural 2018 season. [1]

Community service

Howes has served on the board of directors for the Salt Lake chapter of community organisation United Way. [5] He was a mission president and ecclesiastical leader of about 200 of the LDS Church missionaries in central Arizona between 2010 and 2013. [3]

The History of Major League Soccer began in 1988, when the United States Soccer Federation pledged to create a Division 1 professional soccer league as a condition to FIFA awarding the 1994 FIFA World Cup to the United States. Major League Soccer was officially formed in 1995. The league began play in 1996 with 10 teams, and in 1998 grew to 12 teams. MLS experienced some difficulties in its first seasons, with the league losing money in the early years, resulting in two teams folding after the 2001 season. MLS has rebounded since then, with increased attendance and the development of soccer-specific stadiums. With an average attendance of over 20,000 per game, MLS has the third highest average attendance of any sports league in the U.S. after the National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB), and is the seventh highest attended professional soccer league worldwide. MLS currently has 24 teams, with further expansion planned. The league plans to expand to 29 teams with the addition of Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC in 2020 and Austin FC in 2021, and Sacramento and St. Louis in 2022, with further plans to expand to 30 teams at a later date. On August 8, 2019, MLS awarded 28th franchise to St. Louis, Missouri. MLS is currently the largest first division professional soccer league in the world.

Zions Bank Stadium is a soccer-specific stadium in Herriman, Utah, United States, with a seating capacity of 5,000. The stadium is home to Real Monarchs, a United Soccer League team affiliated with Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer, and the Utah Warriors, a Major League Rugby team. The stadium is part of the $78 million Zions Bank Real Academy, which includes the academy and training facilities for Real Salt Lake, and is near the Mountain View Corridor. It was originally scheduled to open on March 31, 2018, but moved back to April after construction delays. In May 2017, Real Salt Lake and Zions Bank announced a sponsorship deal that would give the bank naming rights to the stadium.
