On April 1, 2003, wanting to expand the province's involvement in foreign policy, the name was changed to the Department of Intergovernmental and International Relations. On February 14, 2006, it was returned to the name of Intergovernmental Affairs.

Iris Sylvia Evans is a former Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations for the Canadian province. From November 25, 2004 to December 15, 2006 she served as Alberta's Minister of Health and Wellness in Premier Ralph Klein's cabinet. After Ed Stelmach assumed the office of Premier, she was named Minister of Employment, Immigration and Industry in his cabinet. After the 2008 Alberta provincial election, Premier Stelmach appointed Evans as Minister of Finance and Enterprise. She was moved over to Intergovernmental Relations in January 2010.
The Minister of Local Government is a cabinet minister in the province of Manitoba, Canada. The position was created in 1999 as the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs. The portfolio was designated as Intergovernmental Affairs and Trade from November 2003 to September 2006, when responsibility for trade was shifted to the new portfolio of Competitiveness, Training and Trade. Then, the portfolio went back to being called Intergovernmental Affairs. In November 2009, when Greg Selinger became Premier, the portfolio was renamed Local Government. In October 2013, it was renamed Municipal Government.
