The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the state organisation responsible for defending the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The FARDC was rebuilt patchily as part of the peace process which followed the end of the Second Congo War in July 2003.

The National Congress for the Defence of the People is a political armed militia established by Laurent Nkunda in the Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in December 2006. The CNDP was engaged in the Kivu conflict, an armed conflict against the military of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In January 2009, the CNDP split and Nkunda was arrested by the Rwanda government. The remaining CNDP splinter faction, led by Bosco Ntaganda, was planned to be integrated into the national army.
Philemon Kisempia Sungilanga Lombe was the 17th chief of staff of the Military of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC). He took up the position on 26 June 2004, and held it until Tuesday 12 June 2007, when he was replaced by Lieutenant-Général Dieudonné Kayembe Mbandakulu. Earlier in his career, he commanded the 2nd Military Region in Bas-Congo province.
John Numbi was a Congolese security officer and retainer of Joseph Kabila, who rose to the rank of General. Until January 2010, he was the Inspector General of the Congolese National Police. In 2018 he was appointed as the Inspector General of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC). He was replaced in that role in 2020, and fled the DR Congo after Joseph Kabila's power dwindled in the first quarter of 2021.

Army General Célestin Mbala Munsense is a Congolese military officer who has served as the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) since 14 July 2018. He is considered a loyalist of President Joseph Kabila and held a number of high ranking posts in the presidential and military administration prior to his appointment, replacing Army General Didier Etumba as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces. Before that, he was a long time Chief of Staff to the President's office, since at least 2010, as a brigadier general. In September 2014, during Kabila's restructuring of the army, Mbala was a major general and was appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration and Logistics.

Effective 4 October 2022, he is the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the title given to the commander of the armed forces of that country. Before his present position, he was the commander of the Republican Guard that is "responsible for the security of the Head of State and other strategic security installations". General Tshiwewe replaced Lieutenant General Célestin Mbala, who was the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo from 14 July 2018 until 4 October 2022.
