Maiduguri Place in Borno, Nigeria

Maiduguri is the capital and the largest city of Borno State in north-eastern Nigeria. The city sits along the seasonal Ngadda River which disappears into the Firki swamps in the areas around Lake Chad. Maiduguri was founded in 1907 as a military outpost by the British and has since grown rapidly with a population exceeding a million by 2007.

St. Mary's Cathedral in Okigwe is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Okigwe. in 2016 the IMO state government recommissioned a new cattle market in the city in respect to the previous one that has been relocate to Abia.

The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is a Federal higher institution located in Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State in northeast Nigeria. The university was created by the federal government of Nigeria in 1975, with the intention of its becoming one of the country's principal higher-education institutions. It enrolls about 25,000 students in its combined programs, which include a college of medicine and faculties of agriculture, arts, dentistry, education, engineering, law, management science, pharmacy, science, social science, and veterinary medicine. With the encouragement of the federal government, the university has recently been increasing its research efforts, particularly in the fields of agriculture and conflict resolution, and expanding the university press. The total budget is ₦1,920,660,623.11. The university is the major higher institution of learning in the north-eastern part of the country.

2009 Boko Haram uprising

The 2009 Boko Haram uprising was a conflict between Boko Haram, a militant Islamist group, and Nigerian security forces. Violence across several states in northeastern Nigeria resulted in more than 1,000 dead, with around 700 killed in the city of Maiduguri alone, according to one military official.

Muslim sect Boko Haram has been accused of hijacking Christians. The Church of Christ in Nigeria and Baptists are present in the state, too.

The Jos Province is one of the 14 ecclesiastical provinces of the Church of Nigeria. It was one of the original ten provinces created in 2002. It is divided in ten dioceses, 31 archdeaconries and 137 parishes. Their first Archbishop was Emmanuel Mani who was at that time the Bishop of Maiduguri. He served one term and handed over to Benjamin Kwashi (2008-2017) also the Bishop of Jos. ). Archbishop Kwashi handed over to Archbishop Henry Ndukuba who served from 2017-2020. The current archbishop is Markus Ibrahim who is also the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Yola. On March 25, 2020, Archbishop Ndukuba took over as the Primate of All Nigeria.

March 2015 Maiduguri suicide bombing

On March 7, 2015, a suicide bomber blew himself up on a cycle rickshaw near a fish market in Maiduguri in northeast Nigeria, and killed at least 10 people. Later, it was officially reported that there were a series of five bomb blasts carried out by suicide bombers on the same day in five different areas of the city. According to multiple sources, 58 people were killed and over 143 people wounded.

September 2015 Borno State bombings

On the evening of September 20, 2015, a series of bombings took place in Maiduguri and Monguno, Nigeria, killing at least 145 people and injuring at least 97 others. The majority of casualties occurred in Maiduguri where four explosions killed at least 117 people.

2016 Maiduguri suicide bombings

On 16 March 2016, two female suicide bombers, thought to be members of Boko Haram, killed 22 people worshiping at the Molai-Umarari mosque on the outskirts of Maiduguri, Nigeria. The first bomb detonated at around 5am as worshipers were beginning their early morning prayers.

Chibok ambush

The Chibok ambush was an attack of Boko Haram insurgents against a Nigerian Army convoy in the night from 13 to 14 May 2014, as the latter was searching for schoolgirls who had been kidnapped by the Islamist rebels. Even though the Nigerian Army forces managed to extricate themselves from the ambush, the attack seriously affected the morale of the involved soldiers who felt that their leadership was carelessly sacrificing them in the war against the insurgents. As result, elements of the Nigerian Army's 7th Division subsequently mutinied at Maiduguri and almost killed their own commander, "humiliat[ing] the Nigerian military".

During the evening of 9 February 2020, a group of heavily armed men in trucks carried out an attack of mass murder, looting, arson and kidnapping against civilians in Auno, Borno State, northeastern Nigeria. Auno is about 15 miles (24 km) to the west of Maiduguri. The attack happened on the A3 highway, which links Maiduguri to Potiskum in Yobe State. Most of the victims were waiting to drive east, having had to stop because the Army had shut the road to Maiduguri. Many were asleep when the attack began. The insurgents killed at least 30 people, destroyed 18 vehicles and abducted women and children.

At about 1:30pm on 14 January 2014, a car bomb exploded in Maiduguri, Borno State, northeastern Nigeria. The bombing, which killed at least 17 people, occurred in front of the state television offices and near to a market. The military said that a suspect was arrested. Jihadist group Boko Haram - who target Maiduguri more than they do any other city - said that they carried out the attack.
