World Aquatics, formerly known as FINA, is the international federation recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for administering international competitions in water sports. It is one of several international federations which administer a given sport or discipline for both the IOC and the international community. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
A diving platform or diving tower is a type of structure used for competitive diving. It consists of a vertical rigid "tower" with one or more horizontal platforms extending out over a deep pool of water. In platform diving, the diver jumps from a high stationary surface. The height of the platforms – 10 metres (33 ft), 7.5 metres (25 ft) and 5 metres (16 ft) – gives the diver enough time to perform the acrobatic movements of a particular dive. There are additional platforms set at 3 metres (9.8 ft) and 1 metre (3.3 ft). Diving platforms for FINA sanctioned meets must be at least 6 metres (20 ft) long and 2 metres (6.6 ft) wide. Most platforms are covered by some sort of matting or non-slip surface to prevent athletes from slipping.
Diving was first introduced in the official programme of the Summer Olympic Games at the 1904 Games of St. Louis and has been an Olympic sport since. It was known as "fancy diving" for the acrobatic stunts performed by divers during the dive. This discipline of Aquatics, along with swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo, is regulated and supervised by the International Swimming Federation (FINA), the international federation (IF) for aquatic sports.
At the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, four diving events were organized, two for men, and two for women. The competitions were held from Monday, 8 August 1932 to Saturday, 13 August 1932.
At the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, four diving events were contested. For the first time, women competed in diving at the Olympic Games. The competitions were held from Saturday 6 July 1912 to Monday 15 July 1912.
At the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, five diving events were contested. The women's 3 metre springboard competition was added to the Olympic programme. The competitions were held from Monday, 22 August 1920 to Monday, 29 August 1920.
At the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, five diving events were contested. The competitions were held from Monday, 14 July 1924 to Sunday, 20 July 1924.
At the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, four diving events were contested. The men's plain high diving event was dropped from the Olympic program. The competitions were held from Monday, 6 August 1928 to Saturday, 11 August 1928.
At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, four diving events were contested, two for men, and two for women. The competitions were held from Monday 10 August 1936 to Saturday 15 August 1936.
Thomas Robert Daley is a British diver and television personality. Specialising in multiple events, he is an Olympic gold medallist in the men's synchronised 10-metre platform event at the 2020 Olympics and double world champion in the FINA 10-metre platform event, winning in 2009 at the age of fifteen, and again in 2017. He is an Olympic bronze medallist in the 2012 platform event, the 2016 synchronised event, and the 2020 platform event, making him the first British diver to win four Olympic medals. Daley also competes in team events, winning the inaugural mixed team World title in 2015. He is a one-time Olympic champion, 3-time World Champion, a 2-time junior World Champion, a 5-time European champion and 4-time Commonwealth champion.
Carl Hjalmar August Johansson was a Swedish pioneer diver and swimmer who competed at the 1908 and 1912 Summer Olympics.
Iván Alejandro García Navarro is a Mexican diver. He is nicknamed "Pollo" ("Chicken"). He competes in diving and represented Mexico at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He won a silver medal in the 10m Synchronized Platform with his partner Germán Sánchez with a high score of 468.90. In the individual 10m Platform, García came the 7th with a score of 521.65.
The diving portion of the 2013 World Aquatics Championships was held from 20–28 July 2013 at the Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc in Barcelona, Spain.
The diving competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo featured eight events. It was one of four aquatic sports at the Games, along with swimming, water polo, and synchronised swimming.
The diving competitions at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland took place between 30 July and 2 August at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh. It was one of two aquatic sports at the Games, along with swimming.
Diving at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships was held between 14 and 22 July 2017 in Budapest, Hungary.
The European Diving Championships are biennial diving competitions, organized by LEN. The meet features divers from Europe, competing in events on 1-meter and 3-meter springboards and on 10-meter platform. The meet has traditionally been held in June.
Cassiel Rousseau is an Australian diver. He competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics in the men's 10 metre platform. Rousseau claimed gold in the men’s 10m platform World Championships event in Fukuoka 2023, creating history for the Australian diving team by becoming the first Australian men's 10m platform world champion.
The diving competitions at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile are scheduled to take place from October 26 to 30, 2023 at the Aquatics Centre. It will be one of four aquatic sports at the Games, along with swimming, water polo, and artistic swimming.
The diving competitions at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are scheduled to run from 27 July to 10 August 2024 at the Paris Aquatics Centre. A total of 136 divers, with an equal distribution between men and women, will compete across eight medal events at these Games, the exact same amount as Tokyo 2020.
