The Doctor of Physiotherapy is an extended master's degree under the Australian Qualifications Framework Level 9 classification. The Doctor of Physiotherapy program at this time is only offered in Australia. The degree should not be confused with the American Doctor of Physical therapy, which is a post baccalaureate degree.

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) specifies the standards for educational qualifications in Australia. It is administered nationally by the Australian Government's Department of Industry, with oversight from the States and Territories, through the Standing Council of Tertiary Education Skills and Employment. While the AQF specifies the standards, education and training organisations are authorised by accrediting authorities to issue a qualification.

A Doctor of Physical Therapy or Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) degree is a qualifying degree in physical therapy. In the United States, it is considered a graduate level first-professional degree or Doctor's degree-professional practice. In the United Kingdom training includes advanced professional training and doctoral-level research.
