Ladakh Region administered as a union territory by India

Ladakh is a region administered by India as a union territory, and constituting a part of the larger Kashmir region, which has been the subject of dispute between India, Pakistan, and China since 1947. It is bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region to the east, the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh to the south, both the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan to the west, and the southwest corner of Xinjiang across the Karakoram Pass in the far north. It extends from the Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram range to the north to the main Great Himalayas to the south. The eastern end, consisting of the uninhabited Aksai Chin plains, is claimed by the Indian Government as part of Ladakh, and has been under Chinese control since 1962. Until 2019, Ladakh was a region of the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir. In August 2019, the Parliament of India passed an act by which Ladakh became a union territory on 31 October 2019.

Encompassing two historical regions known as Purig and Zanskar, the district lies to the northwest of the Great Himalayan range and encompasses the majority of the Zanskar Range. Dras River

The Dras River, also spelt Drass River, is a river in the Kargil district in the Indian union territory of Ladakh. It originates below the Zoji La pas in the Great Himalayan range and flows northeast towards Kargil, where it joins the Suru River. The Shingo River, which flows in a parallel direction in Pakistan-administered Baltistan, also joins the Drass River. The combined river is alternatively called Suru, Drass and Shingo by various local groups.

Batalik Town in Ladakh, India

Batalik is a town in Ladakh, India, located on the upper reaches of the Indus river. It has been a focal point in the Kargil War because of its strategic location between Kargil, Leh and Baltistan. Operation Safed Sagar, 1971 and the Kargil war, 1999 were both fought in this region. Batalik is 56 km from Kargil and is known for its four Brokpa villages: Dah, Hanu, Garkon, Chulichan, Sharchay and Darchak. The Brokpa tribe is believed to be directly descended from the soldiers of Alexander the Great. Most of the valley is made up of nominally Buddhist Brokpas, but a few communities have converted to Shia Islam and intermarried with other Muslim ethnic groups as a result.

Zoji La

Zoji La is a high mountain pass in the Himalayas in the Indian union territory of Ladakh. Located in the Drass, the pass connects the Kashmir Valley to its west with the Drass and Suru valleys to its northeast and the Indus valley further east.

Machoi Peak

Machoi Peak is a mountain with a peak elevation of 17,907 ft, in Drass region of Ladakh and Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Machoi Peak is part of the Himalaya Range, and is located between Amarnath cave and Zojila. It lies 105 km north east from Srinagar, 25 km from Sonamarg in the east and 30 km from Drass. It rises from the glacier of its name Machoi Glacier is the source of Dras River in Drass, Ladakh and Sind River in the vicinity of Kashmir valley. Machoi Peak rises from the Machoi glacier is a pyramid-shaped peak with ice falls and ice fields at its bottom and ridges.

The Machoi Glacier is a 9 kilometer long glacier in the north eastern Himalayan Range situated 30kilometer west from Drass, Ladakh, India and 8 kilometers east from Sonamarg on the southern side of NH 1D at Zojila. It lies at an average elevation of 4800 meters.

Kargil War Memorial

The Kargil War Memorial, also known as Dras War Memorial, is a war memorial built by the Indian Army in the town of Dras, commemorating the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan. The memorial is located on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway 1D, about 5 km from the city centre across the Tiger Hill.

Point 5353 Mountain peak situated on the Line of Control in Kashmir
