Kentaurus is an armored infantry fighting vehicle (AIFV) designed and developed by the Greek vehicle builder ELVO. Its history is connected with the need for an advanced AIFV by the Greek Armed Forces. The vehicle takes its name from the Greek word for Centaur the creature from Greek mythology. After aborted efforts including Leonidas-2 variants and other attempted improvements and joint developments, ELVO worked entirely on its own, on a new design according to the specifications given at the time by the Hellenic Army. The resulting AIFV developed by the Greek company, named 'Kentaurus' ('ΚΕΝΤΑΥΡΟΣ'), was officially introduced at the Defendory Arms Exhibition in Athens in 1998. It features a 420 hp MTU Diesel engine, 30 mm EBO cannon and 7.62 mm machine-gun, Pyrkal smoke-grenade launchers, Toxotis computerized fire control system and KUKA turret. The crew is 3+8, maximum speed on roads is 75 km/h and maximum weight is 19.8 tons.

EAS is the company formed by the merger in 2004 of the Greek defence companies EBO and Pyrkal. When created, it was a major manufacturer with thousands of employees, with a product range that included most land weapons in use today, as well as an established exporter to many countries in the world.

The Stokes mortar was a British trench mortar designed by Sir Wilfred Stokes KBE that was issued to the British and U.S. armies, as well as the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps, during the latter half of the First World War. The 3-inch trench mortar is a smooth-bore, muzzle-loading weapon for high angles of fire. Although it is called a 3-inch mortar, its bore is actually 3.2 inches or 81 mm.

The Battle of Meritsa or Battle of Oxyneia was fought on 11–12 February 1943 between some 800 men of the Greek People's Liberation Army (ELAS), under Nestoras Vokas, Nikos Zaralis ("Chasiotis"), and Ilias Kafantaris ("Adamantios") against a Royal Italian Army battalion. It was fought at the village of Meritsa near Kalambaka. In the battle, 137 Italians were killed, and 160 were taken prisoner, along with their entire equipment, including 4 mortars, 20 automatic weapons, and over 2,000 grenades. The partisans released their prisoners, but kept the equipment.
Stamatis Vellidis is a retired general of the Hellenic Army who acted as chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff (1986–1989) and chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (1989–1990). After his retirement, he became president of the Administrative Council of the Hellenic Arms Industry. He was a close friend and associate of the Minister for National Defence Ioannis Charalambopoulos.
