Eastern Sociological Society is a non-profit organization with a mission of "promoting excellence in sociological scholarship and instruction". It publishes a peer-reviewed journal (Sociological Forum) and holds a yearly academic conference, the Annual Meeting of Eastern Sociological Society.

David Émile Durkheim was a French sociologist. Durkheim formally established the academic discipline of sociology and is commonly cited as one of the principal architects of modern social science, along with both Karl Marx and Max Weber.
Rural sociology is a field of sociology traditionally associated with the study of social structure and conflict in rural areas. It is an active academic field in much of the world, originating in the United States in the 1910s with close ties to the national Department of Agriculture and land-grant university colleges of agriculture.

Sociological Forum is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal published by Wiley on behalf of the Eastern Sociological Society. The journal was established in 1986 with Robin M. Williams Jr as founding editor-in-chief. Subsequent editors were Steven Cole, Richard Hall, Robert Max Jackson and presently, Karen A. Cerulo.

The North Central Sociological Association is a regional sociology association covering multiple parts of the U.S. Midwest, namely: Eastern Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Western Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. It also covers Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1925 as a result of an American Sociological Society meeting held the previous December. It was originally called the Ohio Sociological Society, and changed its name to the Ohio Valley Sociological Society in 1937, whereupon it expanded to include multiple other states besides Ohio. Its official journal is Sociological Focus, which has been published continuously since 1968. Previously its journal was known as The Ohio Valley Sociologist between 1938 and 1967, and from 1927 to 1938 was called The Ohio Sociologist.
