Chowan County is one of the 100 counties located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,793. Its county seat is Edenton. The county was created between 1668 and 1671 as Shaftesbury Precinct and later renamed Chowan Precinct. It gained county status in 1739.

The USCGC Alex Haley (WMEC-39) is a United States Coast Guard Cutter and former U.S. Navy vessel that was recommissioned for Coast Guard duty on 10 July 1999. In 1995, Edenton won the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award for the Atlantic Fleet.
College of The Albemarle (COA) is a community college located in the Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina, U.S. The main campus is located in Elizabeth City with satellite campuses in Barco, Manteo and Edenton. Established on December 16, 1960, College of The Albemarle became the first established institution of the North Carolina Community College System as chartered by the Community College Act of 1957.
The Edenton Steamers are a collegiate summer baseball team located in Edenton, North Carolina, and one of 16 teams that compete from May–August in the Coastal Plain League. 2017 was the Steamers 20th year as a member of the CPL and they hold 11 North Division titles and 7 East Division titles, three Petitt Cup Championships, and are currently on a league-record 14-year streak (2004–2017) of posting a winning record, having made a playoff appearance in 13 of those seasons. Edenton also established a CPL standard by winning seven consecutive division-half titles from 2011 through the first half of 2014. In 2015 the Steamers capped the summer with its third Petitt Cup Championship, tied for the league record in that tally, and was named the Summer Collegiate Team of the Year by Perfect Game CrossChecker.

The Chowan County Courthouse is a historic courthouse located at East King and Court Streets in Edenton, the county seat of Chowan County, North Carolina. Built in 1767, it is one of the finest examples of public Georgian architecture in the American South. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970.

The district encompasses 342 contributing buildings, 4 contributing sites, and 3 contributing structures. It includes several buildings that are individually listed on the National Register. The Lane House, possibly the oldest surviving house in North Carolina, is owned by Steve and Linda Lane and is located within the district. Also located in the district are the Dixon-Powell House, William Leary House, and Louis Ziegler House designed by architect George Franklin Barber.

The James Iredell House is a historic home located at Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina. The original section was built 1800, and expanded to its present configuration about 1827. It is a two-story, "L"-shaped frame dwelling with Georgian and Federal style design elements. It was the home of James Iredell, an ardent patriot and Justice of the Supreme Court.
St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Churchyard is a historic Episcopal church located at W. Church and Broad Streets in Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina, United States. It was built between 1736 and 1766, and is a five-bay, brick church building with a gable roof. It features a slightly engaged square tower. The interior was restored to its 19th-century appearance following a fire in 1949. The churchyard includes the graves of a number of prominent personages including Stephen Cabarrus, Governor Charles Eden, Governor Thomas Pollock, and Henderson Walker.
Golden Asro Frinks was an American civil rights activist and a Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) field secretary who represented the New Bern, North Carolina SCLC chapter. He is best known as a principal civil rights organizer in North Carolina during the 1960s which landed him a reputation as "The Great Agitator", having been jailed eighty-seven times during his lifetime.
Edenton-Chowan Schools is a PK–12 graded school district serving Chowan County, North Carolina, including the town of Edenton. It was formed from the merger of Edenton City Schools and Chowan County Schools in 1968. Its four schools serve 2,393 students as of the 2010–11 school year.

Barker House is a historic home located at Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina. The original house was built about 1782, and expanded during the 19th century. It is a 2 1/2-story frame dwelling with Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival style design elements. It sits on a brick foundation and has at both ends a pair of single-shoulder exterior chimneys. The front facade features a full-length, two-tier porch carried on superimposed fluted pillars under a shed roof.

The Edenton District Brigade was an administrative division of the North Carolina militia during the American Revolutionary War (1776–1783). This unit was established by the North Carolina Provincial Congress on May 4, 1776, and disbanded at the end of the war.
Edward Vail, Sr. (1717-1777) was a Revolutionary War Colonel of the Edenton District Minutemen and Brigadier General Edenton District Brigade in North Carolina. Prior to the war, he was a Captain in the Chowan County militia during the French and Indian War, as well as member of the Chowan County Courts and represented Chowan County in the Province of North Carolina General Assembly from 1754 to 1762, 1770 to 1771, and 1773 to 1774.
