The 2017 Edmonton municipal election was held Monday, October 16, 2017 to elect a mayor and 12 councillors to the city council, the nine trustees to Edmonton Public Schools, and the seven trustees to the Edmonton Catholic Schools. One incumbent public school trustee had no challenger so was elected by acclamation; for the other eight balloting was conducted. They were all elected to four year terms. Since 2013, provincial legislation has required every municipality to hold quadrennial elections. [1] The voter turnout was 31.5% with 194,826 ballots cast out of the 618,564 estimate eligible voters. [2]

Under the authority of the Peace Officer Act, Alberta Sheriffs are provincial peace officers with jurisdiction over the province of Alberta. The Premier of Alberta has the authority to grant emergency police powers to all Alberta Sheriffs in the case of any major emergencies that occur within the province. Tony Caterina is a business man and municipal politician in Alberta, Canada. He has served as a member of the Edmonton City Council since 2007. Provincially, Tony Caterina ran for election as the Progressive Conservative candidate in the riding of Edmonton-Beverly-Clareview and lost in the May 5, 2015 election to NDP incumbent Deron Bilous.

Janice Rhea Reimer is a Canadian politician and the first female mayor of Edmonton, Alberta, having served in that capacity from 1989 until 1995. The election also featured a non-binding plebiscite about adopting a city council ward system.
