Engage with Grace

Engage With Grace is a non-profit, viral movement designed to help get the conversation about the end-of-life experience started. The movement is built around The One Slide, which has five questions on it and can be used as a tool to help people better understand and communicate their preferences with their loved ones. Engage With Grace also promotes the importance of supporting each other’s preferences and ensuring that these wishes are honored.

History

The concept for Engage With Grace was developed by Alexandra Drane (Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board of Eliza Corporation) and Matthew Holt (Founder of Health2.0 and The Health Care Blog) in the summer of 2008, following a discussion around the fact that so few people discuss their end-of-life preferences. Both Holt and Drane had personally experienced the consequences of not being sure of their loved ones’ preferences. In addition, they wanted to address statistics like the one suggesting that 73% of Americans would prefer to die at home, but only about 25% do.^[1]

"Health 2.0" is a term introduced in the mid-2000s, as the subset of health care technologies mirroring the wider Web 2.0 movement. It has been defined variously as including social media, user-generated content, and cloud-based and mobile technologies. Some Health 2.0 proponents see these technologies as empowering patients to have greater control over their own health care and diminishing medical paternalism. Critics of the technologies have expressed concerns about possible misinformation and violations of patient privacy.

Engage With Grace was launched in October 2008 at the Health 2.0 conference in San Francisco.

Viral campaign

Around Thanksgiving 2008, Engage With Grace supporters launched the first-ever documented Blog rally — organized to encourage families to discuss end-of-life care issues while gathered together for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. More than 100 blogs participated. The Engage With Grace team launched a second blog rally around Thanksgiving of 2009, again with more than 100 participants and countless Tweets and Facebook posts.^[2]

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in Canada, the United States, some of the Caribbean islands, and Liberia. It began as a day of giving thanks and sacrifice for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Similarly named festival holidays occur in Germany and Japan. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States, and around the same part of the year in other places. Although Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, it has long been celebrated as a secular holiday as well.

A blog rally is the simultaneous presentation of identical or similar material on numerous blogs, for the purpose of engaging large numbers of readers and/or persuading them to adopt a certain position or take a certain action. The simultaneous nature of a blog rally can join the efforts of otherwise independent bloggers for an agreed-upon purpose. Blog Action Day can be likened to a blog rally.

Twitter is a microblogging and social networking service on which users post and interact with messages known as "tweets". Tweets were originally restricted to 140 characters, but on November 7, 2017, this limit was doubled to 280 for all languages except Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Registered users can post, like, and retweet tweets, but unregistered users can only read them. Users access Twitter through its website interface, through Short Message Service (SMS) or its mobile-device application software ("app"). Twitter, Inc. is based in San Francisco, California, and has more than 25 offices around the world.

Accolades and recognition

Engage With Grace ranks as one of the 10 phrases that became part of the healthcare lexicon in 2009.^[3] In addition, Engage With Grace co-founder Alexandra Drane received the Boston Business Journal’s “Champions of Healthcare: Community Outreach” award for her work on Engage With Grace.^[4]

NMC Health is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.

Continua Health Alliance is an international non-profit, open industry group of nearly 240 healthcare providers, communications, medical, and fitness device companies. Continua Health Alliance members aim to develop a system to deliver personal and individual healthcare.
