Hofstra University is a private university in Hempstead, New York. It is Long Island's largest private university, Hofstra originated in 1935 as an extension of New York University (NYU) under the name Nassau College – Hofstra Memorial of New York University at Hempstead, Long Island. It became an independent Hofstra College in 1939 and gained university status in 1963. Comprising ten schools, including the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and Deane School of Law, Hofstra has hosted a series of prominent presidential conferences and several United States presidential debates.

The Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University is a law school located in Hempstead, New York on Long Island, affiliated with Hofstra University. Founded in 1970 and accredited by the ABA in 1971, the school offers a JD, a joint JD/MBA degree, and LL.M degrees in American Law and Family law. It also offers online LL.M and MA degrees in Health Law & Policy, an online LL.M in American Law, and an online M.A. in American Legal Studies. The Law School is on the southern portion of the 244-acre (0.99 km2) Hofstra University campus, in Hempstead, New York. The school was renamed to the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University in September 2011.
Deane Chandler Davis was an American attorney and insurance executive from Vermont. Long active in Republican politics, he is most notable for his service as the 74th governor of Vermont from 1969 to 1973.

Thomas Robert Stevens was an American lawyer, politician, and blogger. He founded the Objectivist Party and served as its Chair. Stevens was that party's nominee for President in the 2008 and 2012 United States Presidential elections. He was the founder of the Personal Freedom Party of New York.
