Eric Redman (born June 3, 1948, in Palo Alto, California) is an American author, lawyer, and climate sector professional residing in Seattle, Washington. Redman served as a legislative assistant to Senator Senator Warren G. Magnuson for two years around 1969-70. [1] He is the author of The Dance of Legislation, a best-seller that chronicles the journey through Congress of the bill that established the National Health Service Corps. Initially published in 1973, with a second edition released in 2001, the book remains in print after more than fifty years and provides a Senate staff person’s unique insight into the legislative process. [2]

Redman's writings have appeared in notable publications, including The New York Times, [3] The Washington Post, [4] [5] and Rolling Stone. [6] His article on the climate effects of soot, "A Dirty Little Secret," appeared in the May–June 2005 issue of Legal Affairs. [7]

Educationally, Redman's journey began at Phillips Academy, Andover (1963–66) and Harvard College (1966–1970), followed by a Rhodes Scholarship and Master’s Degree at Oxford University (1970–1972), [1] culminating in a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1975. [8] His professional career took a significant turn in 1983 when he joined Heller Ehrman LLP and established the firm's Energy Practice Group. [9]

After more than three decades specializing in public policy and energy law, Redman transitioned from legal practice to focusing on sustainable energy solutions. He led Summit Power Group Inc. as its President and CEO from 2008 to October 2014, a company known for its work on wind, solar, gas-fired, and carbon-capture power projects, including the Texas Clean Energy Project. [10] [11] Currently, Redman holds positions on the Global Carbon Capture & Storage Institute board, and contributes as a Senior Policy Fellow to the Deep Decarbonization Initiative at the University of California San Diego's graduate School of Global Policy & Strategy.

In a recent venture, Redman joined Aether Fuels Inc. as Vice President following its acquisition of Sustainable Syngas LLC, [12] a company he founded. His advisory roles extend to Hydrostor [13] and Cvictus Inc., [14] reflecting his commitment to energy innovation for climate and environmental sustainability. Additionally, he serves on the Northwest African American Museum board, [15] demonstrating his engagement with cultural and community affairs.

Redman has also ventured into detective fiction, with his debut murder mystery, Bones of Hilo, [16] being chosen as one of five finalists for the International Thriller Writers Award for Best First Novel. [17] A sequel, Death in Hilo, continues the adventures of half-Hawaiian police detective Kawika Wong, intertwining homicide investigations with the rich cultural and geographical tapestry of Hawaiʻi. [18]

Gasification is a process that converts biomass- or fossil fuel-based carbonaceous materials into gases, including as the largest fractions: nitrogen (N2), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2), and carbon dioxide (CO2). This is achieved by reacting the feedstock material at high temperatures (typically >700 °C), without combustion, via controlling the amount of oxygen and/or steam present in the reaction. The resulting gas mixture is called syngas (from synthesis gas) or producer gas and is itself a fuel due to the flammability of the H2 and CO of which the gas is largely composed. Power can be derived from the subsequent combustion of the resultant gas, and is considered to be a source of renewable energy if the gasified compounds were obtained from biomass feedstock.

The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity is a U.S. non-profit advocacy group representing major American coal producers, utility companies and railroads. The organization seeks to influence public opinion and legislation in favor of coal-generated electricity in the United States, placing emphasis on the development and deployment of clean coal technologies.

An integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) is a technology using a high pressure gasifier to turn coal and other carbon based fuels into pressurized gas—synthesis gas (syngas). It can then remove impurities from the syngas prior to the electricity generation cycle. Some of these pollutants, such as sulfur, can be turned into re-usable byproducts through the Claus process. This results in lower emissions of sulfur dioxide, particulates, mercury, and in some cases carbon dioxide. With additional process equipment, a water-gas shift reaction can increase gasification efficiency and reduce carbon monoxide emissions by converting it to carbon dioxide. The resulting carbon dioxide from the shift reaction can be separated, compressed, and stored through sequestration. Excess heat from the primary combustion and syngas fired generation is then passed to a steam cycle, similar to a combined cycle gas turbine. This process results in improved thermodynamic efficiency, compared to conventional pulverized coal combustion.

The Biomass Research and Demonstration Facility uses biomass to create clean heat and energy. This facility is located at 2329 West Mall in Vancouver at the University of British Columbia's West Point Grey Campus. Official operation began in September 2012, by combining syngas and gasification conditioning systems with a Jenbacher engine. The highest potential output of this system is 2 MWe (megawatts) of electricity and 9600 lbs of steam per hour. This system is the first of its type in all of Canada, and it was put together by the cooperation of three parties: General Electric (GE), Nexterra, and the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Founded in 2013, it is a research and advocacy organization that educates, advocates, and collaborates with local partners to amplify on-the-ground solutions.
