Kuwait is a sovereign state in the northeastern Arabian Peninsula, surrounding the Gulf of Kuwait at the head of the Persian Gulf. The geographical region of Kuwait has been occupied by humans since antiquity, particularly due to its strategic location within Mesopotamia. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Kuwait was a prosperous maritime port city and the most important trade port in the northern Gulf region.

The 1980 AFC Asian Cup was the 7th edition of the men's AFC Asian Cup, a quadrennial international football tournament organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The finals were hosted by Kuwait between 15 and 30 September 1980. The field of ten teams was split into two groups of five. Kuwait won their first championship, beating South Korea in the final 3–0.
The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait was a two-day-long operation conducted by Iraq starting on 2 August 1990, whereby it invaded the neighbouring State of Kuwait, consequently resulting in a seven-month-long Iraqi military occupation of the country. The invasion and Iraq's subsequent refusal to withdraw from Kuwait by a deadline mandated by the United Nations led to a direct military intervention by a United Nations-authorized coalition of forces led by the United States. These events came to be known as the first Gulf War, eventually resulting in the forced expulsion of Iraqi troops from Kuwait and the Iraqis setting 600 Kuwaiti oil wells on fire during their retreat.
Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is the Emir of Kuwait and the Commander of the Kuwait Military Forces. On 30 September 2020, he succeeded to the throne following the death of his half-brother Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Nawaf had been nominated as Crown Prince on 7 February 2006.

Qadsia Sporting Club is primarily an association football club. Based in Kuwait City, Al Qadsia was founded in 1953 and it was called Al-Jazira before being renamed to Qadsia SC on 20 October 1960. Qadsia currently plays in the Kuwait Premier League and has won the league recordable 17 times, as the top winning club in the league.
Kuwait Sporting Club is a Kuwaiti professional football and basketball club based in Kuwait City. The football team has won the Kuwaiti Premier League 15 times, with the most recent one coming in 2018–19. Kuwait SC also have 47 trophies to their name in Kuwaiti Club football history. Kuwait SC plays in the Al Kuwait Sports Club Stadium, in Kaifan, which is the 5th largest stadium in Kuwait. Kuwait SC is the first Kuwaiti club to ever win an Asian title that is, the AFC Cup in 2009, 2012, 2013. Kuwait SC is also one of the first sports club to have been established in Kuwait .

Fahaheel Stadium or Nayif Al-Dabbous Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Kuwait City, Kuwait. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Al Fahaheel. This stadium is the second smallest(2000 seats) in the country, and is known for the street fights that litter the alleyways around it. Although this location may not be the safest, it always has a great turnout of fans and is a spectacular place to get a sense of cultural immersion.
Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah was the 15th Ruler of Kuwait and the 6th Emir of the State of Kuwait from 29 January 2006 until his death on 29 September 2020. He was the fourth son of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
The Sheikhdom of Kuwait was a sheikhdom which gained independence from the Khalidi Emirate of Al Hasa under Sabah I bin Jaber in the year 1752. The Sheikhdom became a British protectorate between 1899 and 1961 after the Anglo-Kuwaiti agreement of 1899 was signed between Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah and the British government in India due to threats to Kuwait's independence from the Ottoman Empire.

The 23rd Arabian Gulf Cup was the 23rd edition of the biennial football competition for the eight members of the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation. It took place in Kuwait from 22 December 2017 until 5 January 2018. Oman won their second title, defeating the United Arab Emirates in the final on penalties following a goalless draw.
