Sally Hemings Slave of Thomas Jefferson

Sarah "Sally" Hemings was a biracial enslaved woman who was owned by President Thomas Jefferson. During the 26 months she lived with Jefferson in Paris, she was treated as a free paid servant. During this time, under circumstances that are not well understood, she and Jefferson began having intimate relations. She later negotiated with Jefferson that she would return to Virginia and resume her slave status under condition that all of their children would be emancipated upon reaching 21. Multiple lines of evidence, including modern DNA analyses, indicate that Jefferson impregnated Hemmings over the span of many years, and historians now broadly agree that he was the father of her six children. It remains a matter of fraught controversy as to whether this should be described as rape. Hemings was a half-sister of Jefferson's late wife, Martha Jefferson. Four of Hemings' children survived into adulthood. Hemings died in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1835.

Eston Area and ward in North Yorkshire, England

Eston is an area and former township in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, England. It forms part of the Teesside built-up area's Middlesbrough sub-division.

Eston Hemings Jefferson was born into slavery at Monticello, the youngest son of Sally Hemings, a mixed-race enslaved woman. Most historians who have considered the question believe that his father was Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Evidence from a 1998 DNA test showed that a descendant of Eston matched the Jefferson male line, and historical evidence also supports the conclusion that Thomas Jefferson was probably Eston's father. Many historians believe that Jefferson and Sally Hemings had six children together, four of whom survived to adulthood.
