"Whenever, Wherever" is a mix of Latin music and worldbeat that is heavily influenced by Andean music. The Spanish version of the song, titled "Suerte", lyrically discusses how fortunate Shakira is to have found her romantic partner.

Because of the scenario, Swift related to the plot of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (1597) and used it as a source of inspiration to compose the song. The lyrics are from the perspective of Juliet.
