The FTSE/Athex Large Cap is the stock index of the twenty-five largest companies on the Athens Stock Exchange.

History

The index was launched on 23 September 1997(26 years ago); [1] it was created by FTSE International Ltd. Until December 3, 2012 this index consisted of 20 companies and it was called FTSE/Athex 20. From 3 December 2012 to 19 June 2017 it consisted of 25 stocks. From 19 June 2017 to 18 December 2018 it consisted of 26 members. Since 18 December 2018, it consists once again of 25 members.

The Athens Stock Exchange is the stock exchange of Greece, based in the capital city of Athens. It was founded in 1876. There are currently five markets operating in ATHEX: regulated securities market, regulated derivatives market, Alternative market, carbon market and OTC market. In the regulated securities market investors can trade in stocks, bonds, ETFs and other related securities. On the stock exchange 172 stocks are currently traded representing 166 companies.

ANEK Lines is one of the largest passenger shipping companies in Greece. It was founded in 1967 by numerous shareholders who were inhabitants of Crete. It operates passenger ferries, mainly on the Piraeus–Crete and Adriatic Sea routes.

The Agricultural Bank of Greece was a commercial bank based in Athens, Greece. The bank was founded in 1929. The bank proclaimed that it would focus on the Balkan bank market, with the business activities of supporting of the agricultural sector. ATEbank held a strong position at Athens Stock Exchange and has become a member of Piraeus Bank in the year 2013.

The Bank of Cyprus is a Cypriot financial services company established in 1899 with its headquarters in Strovolos.

Proton Bank was a Greek bank that was established in 2001 and was taken over by the government in 2011. The bank offered private and corporate banking services.

Viohalco S.A., a Greek heavy industry corporation, was established in 1937, made its debut on the Athens Stock Exchange in 1947 and is included in the FTSE/Athex Large Cap stock exchange index. The company is composed of tens of different companies active in the metal production, steel and aluminum trade. Its president, Nikos Stasinopoulos, is one of the richest businessmen in Greece. The magnitude of this corporation is visible in the fact that 7 percent of Greek exports are made by it. Viohalco’s overall sales for 2021 came to around 5.4 billion euros, with profits of 220 million euros.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Psyttaleia</span>

Psyttaleia is an uninhabited island in the Saronic Gulf between the harbor of Piraeus and the Kynosoura peninsula on Salamis Island, Greece. It covers an area of 0.375 square kilometers. The island houses Athens' largest sewage treatment plant, which is also the largest in Europe, with a projected daily maximum drying capacity of 750 tons of sewage. Administratively it is part of the Municipality of Piraeus.

Water supply and sanitation in Greece is characterised by diversity. While Athens receives its water from a series of reservoirs, some of which are located 200 km away, some small islands are supplied with water from tankers. Greeks have suffered from repeated droughts, the most recent one occurring in 2007. The EU supported the construction of numerous wastewater treatment plants since the 1990s in order to achieve EU environmental standards. While the wastewater discharge of the biggest cities is now in compliance with these standards, some smaller towns still lag behind.

The Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company is the largest Greek enterprise in its sector. Based in Galatsi in Athens, it is serving 4.3 million customers in the metropolitan area of Athens with fresh water and 3.5 million customers with sewers.

GEK Terna Holding Real Estate Construction (Greek: ΓΕΚ ΤΕΡΝΑ) is a large Greek conglomerate which is listed on the Athens Exchange. Its construction branch Terna is one of the leading enterprises of its sector in Greece.

Terna Energy is a Greek renewable energy company that is listed on the Athens Exchange.
