Contested by 12 teams, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Qatari Second Division (QSD). Seasons of the QSL usually run from September to April.

Khalfan Ibrahim Khalfan Al Khalfan is a retired Qatari international footballer who played as a winger. He was named the Asian Player of the Year in 2006, becoming the first Qatari to win the title. He played for Al Arabi at youth level before moving to Al Sadd in 2004 on a professional contract.

The 5th Arabian Gulf Cup was the fifth edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup, held every two years and organised by the AGCFF. The tournament was held in Baghdad, Iraq and was won by the hosts, Iraq. The tournament took place between 23 March and 9 April 1979. All matches were played at the Al-Shaab Stadium. Originally, the tournament was scheduled to take place in 1978 and hosted in Abu Dhabi, but the tournament was delayed after the United Arab Emirates withdrew from organizing the tournament.

Fahad Mosaed al-Muwallad is a Saudi Arabian professional footballer who plays for Al-Ittihad. He started his professional career with Al-Ittihad when he was only 16 years old. On 31 July 2011 he scored the second goal for Saudi Arabia against Croatia in the 2011 U-20 World Cup in Colombia, which marked his first ever international goal at age 16. In 2012 while playing for Al-Ittihad, he entered the match as a substitute in the last 10 minutes and scored the winning goal against Guangzhou Evergrande F.C. to qualify with his team to AFC Champions League Semi-finals. With Saudi Arabia, he scored the winning goal against China in Asian Cup qualifications. Additionally and most notably he also scored the goal which sent Saudi Arabia to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and is known for having the top speed of any Asian player ever.
