Finale is a 2012 young adult fantasy novel by Becca Fitzpatrick and is the fourth and final book of the Hush, Hush series. The novel focuses on Nora and Patch, who must devise a plan to bring the nephils and fallen angels to peace. [1]
Fitzpatrick stated she felt a strange melancholy the summer she finished Finale, knowing she would never spend time writing about these characters again, and she also said she felt deeply grateful to all the fans who had supported her series. [2]
Nora Grey has become the leader of the Nephilim army after the death of Hank Millar, the 'Dark Hand'. The Nephilim do not know Nora nor trust her, so Nora must prove herself to her own people. Her boyfriend Patch being a fallen angel does not help her case, as fallen angels are sworn enemies of the Nephilim. She must find a way to make peace between her people without breaking the vow she gave Hank or losing Patch. Breaking the vow would not only lead to her death, but her mother's as well. At the same time, Nora owes the archangels peace for their help in killing Hank Millar.
Nora inherits her second lieutenant, Dante Matterazzi, from the Dark Hand. Dante wants to present himself as Nora's new boyfriend to the Nephilim replacing Patch, so that Nora's reputation will improve among the Nephilim. Nora accepts this and she and Patch decide it is for the best. For this reason, they start limiting how much time they spend in public together. Dante also insists on training Nora, to help build her strength that natural born Nephilim come to naturally.
Nora witnesses an archangel, whom she believes is trying to chain Patch in hell, speaking with Dabria. Nora suspects that Dabria is blackmailing the archangel, Pepper, and this is why Pepper is after Patch. Before Nora can do anything about this sitatuion, a group of fallen angles march into the bar and try to force some Nephilim to swear fealty to them. Nora and Vee escape before the fallen angels see them. The following day, Pepper tricks Nora into leaving school to meet him. She manages to escape when he reveals her intent to kidnap her to make Patch follow her, finding herself strengthened by the drink Dante gave her. Nora confronts Dante later and he tells her the drink is enchanted with devilcraft and that he has been working with another nephil on a weapon enchanted with devilcraft that can kill a fallen angel.
Nora and Patch finally confront Pepper and promise to help him stop the person blackmailing him. Nora thinks it is Dabria, but is shocked to find it is Dante, who is working with the fallen angels to control the Nephilim. Nora tries to stop him, but fails. She calls a meeting of her own and challenges him to a duel. Suspecting she doesn't have much time left, she goes to Vee's house and tells her everything she's been keeping her. Vee is not that surprised, and reveals to Nora that she herself is a Nephilim. The night before the duel, Nora learns that Marcie was also working with Dante and that they have burned all the fallen angel's feathers, sending them all to Hell, including Patch. Marcie was influenced by Dante to believe that she should have been Hank's heir, and Dante also told her that Nora killed Hank.
Nora is in so much agony that she almost does not go to the duel. However, when she arrives, she discovers that Dante has opened that gates of Hell and forced all fallen angels to swear loyalty to him. Dante brings his army out of hell and begins slaughtering the Nephilim. Nora takes on Dante and wins, but only after the loss of her friend Scott. With Dante's death, everything sustained by devilcraft also dies, including all fallen angels. Nora mourns over Scott's body. Detective Basso admits he is an archangel sent to put an end to devilcraft. He tells Nora to cut along the scar on her wrist when it is time. Patch stumbles up, explaining that fallen angels that swore loyalty and ingested devilcraft were sent to hell, but he possessed Rixon to get out. He gives her a ring and they make a blood oath to love each other forever. She cuts her wrist and suddenly, Patch can feel things like a human can.
Finale was nominated for the 2012 Reader's Favorite Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction on Goodreads. [3] Additionally, Finale ranked second on Publishers Weekly 2012 Children's Frontlist Fiction Bestsellers list. [4]
Reception from the fans is mixed to positive, with a Niles West News review stating that while the novel felt repetitive and similar to the previous books, the relationships between the characters and the book as a whole was very emotionally moving. [1]
While Fitzpatrick has stated she has no intentions of writing any spin offs, she released a lost love letter from Patch to Nora as a Valentine's Day surprise for her fans on her blog in 2013. [5]
