Premise

The documentary examines the crashes of two Boeing 737 MAX planes that claimed the lives of 346 people on board. Told through the perspective of journalist, Dominic Gates, surviving family member Zipporah Kuria, lawyers, Justin Green and Eric Havian, and whistleblower Edward Pierson. [2] [3]

Production

In 2019, Karim Amer and Jehane Noujaim met with Mary Inman at a conference, where she informed them a client of hers, Edward Pierson of Boeing was going to be coming forward surrounding the two crashes, testifying in front of Congress. 24 hours later, producer, Leen Karadsheh went to Washington, and began following Pierson. [4] Initially, Pierson turned down their requests to document, but had several conversations with the filmmakers who stated they would stay out of his way and in the background, with the two sharing the same goal of bringing pressure to Boeing. [5] During production, subjects were not asked to sign releases until after filming had concluded, with no limits on what they could later retract. [6]

Soren Anderson reviewing the film for The Seattle Times wrote: "Despite its flaws, 'Flight/Risk' is a comprehensive and stinging critique of a once-proud company that has lost its way and is struggling to make a comeback. And it's a tribute to the people who died and the families who mourn them." [9] Christopher Llewellyn Reed of Film Festival Today gave the film 3 out of 4 stars writing: "The story, full of righteous outrage, is what makes it. I recommend the documentary to everyone, even though it will make you never want to fly again." [10]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Reactions to the Boeing 737 MAX groundings</span>

The two fatal Boeing 737 MAX crashes in October 2018 and March 2019 which were similar in nature – both aircraft were newly delivered and crashed shortly after takeoff – and the subsequent groundings of the global 737 MAX fleet drew mixed reactions from multiple organizations. Boeing expressed its sympathy to the relatives of the Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash victims, while simultaneously defending the aircraft against any faults and suggesting the pilots had insufficient training, until rebutted by evidence. After the 737 MAX fleet was globally grounded, starting in China with the Civil Aviation Administration of China the day after the second crash, Boeing provided several outdated return-to-service timelines, the earliest of which was "in the coming weeks" after the second crash. On October 11, 2019, David L. Calhoun replaced Dennis Muilenburg as chairman of Boeing, then succeeded Muilenburg's role as chief executive officer in January 2020.

The Boeing 737 MAX was initially certified in 2017 by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Global regulators grounded the plane in 2019 following fatal crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302. Both crashes were linked to the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), a new automatic flight control feature. Investigations into both crashes determined that Boeing and the FAA favored cost-saving solutions, which ultimately produced a flawed design of the MCAS instead. The FAA's Organization Designation Authorization program, allowing manufacturers to act on its behalf, was also questioned for weakening its oversight of Boeing.

Downfall: The Case Against Boeing is a 2022 American documentary film directed by Rory Kennedy. Interviewing relevant people and featuring archival footage, the documentary looks into the events throughout the history of the aircraft manufacturer company Boeing that led to the crashes of two 737 MAX planes and occurring within a short time span, as well as its subsequent investigation. The film sides with interviewees in criticizing the capitalization of Boeing, noting that the urge to beat major competitor Airbus led to the neglect of component failures within the 737 MAX.
