Frank Portelli (1922-2004) was a mural artist and fine art painter from Malta whose work was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1958. [1] Within a few months after his death, one of his murals was also acquired by Heritage Malta for the country's national art collection. [2]

Education

Portelli started attending the School of Art in Valletta when he was 13 years old. There, along with fellow artist Antoine Camilleri, he studied under the Caruana Dingli brothers, Edward and Robert, and Karmenu Mangion. [1]

He distinguished himself at the School of Art in 1947, earning a scholarship to study at Leicester College in England. [3]

Career

The foremost work from he early career is an autobiographical work he started in 1944, immediately following the death of his father. [4]

After he completed his formal studies, in 1951 he co-founded the Modern Art Circle in Malta. With this group he made his first public appearance at the Malta Society of Art's Palazzo de la Salle in 1952. [1] The Modern Art Circle was later rebranded as the Modern Art Group and Atelier 56. [5]

In 1957 he was one of six modern artists from Malta selected to exhibit at the first ever Malta pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1958. His painting Resurrezione signed and dated 1957 was exhibited prominently in Venice and appeared on an official postcard issued by organizers. [6]

Throughout the 1960s Portelli created a number of murals for the nascent tourism industry. One of these, called Maltese Crafts, was created for the Melliħa Bay Hotel in 1969, and acquired for Malta's national art collection in 2004. [5]

Personal life

In 1952 he married Rosa née Attard. They had three children: Henri (b. 1953), Simone (b. 1956) and Sharonne (b. 1958). [1]

Frank Portelli died on 13 March 2004.

Gioni was the curator of the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013.

Emanuel Vincent "Emvin" Cremona was a Maltese artist and stamp designer. He is regarded as one of the best Maltese artists of the 20th century. Cremona is known for designing most Maltese stamps from 1957 to the 1980s, including the stamp issue commemorating Malta's independence from Great Britain in 1964. He studied at the Malta School of Arts and the Regia Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome. Some of his works can be found at the parish churches of Msida and Ħamrun, Ta' Pinu Sanctuary and the Chapel of the Malta International Airport. The World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva and the United Nations Headquarters in New York also house paintings by Cremona.

Graham Fagen

Graham Fagen is a Scottish artist living and working in Glasgow, Scotland. He has exhibited internationally at the Busan Biennale, South Korea (2004), the Art and Industry Biennial, New Zealand (2004), the Venice Biennale (2003) and represented Scotland at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015 in a presentation curated and organised by Hospitalfield. In Britain he has exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Britain and the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London. In 1999 he was invited by the Imperial War Museum, London to work as the Official War Artist for Kosovo.

Matthew Drutt American curator and writer (born 1962)

Matthew Joseph Williams Drutt is an American curator and writer who specializes in modern and contemporary art and design. Based in New York, he has operated Drutt Creative Arts Management (DCAM) since 2013. He has worked with the Beyeler Foundation in Switzerland (2013–2015) and the State Hermitage Museum in Russia (2013–2014), consulting on exhibitions, publications, and collections. He is currently working on a number of publications for Arnoldsche Art Publishers. In 2006, the French Government awarded him the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and in 2003, his exhibition Kazimir Malevich: Suprematism won Best Monographic Exhibition Organized Nationally from the International Association of Art Critics.

Biren De (1926–2011) was an Indian painter of modern art, known for his paintings with tantric influences. His paintings were characterized by symmetrical patterns of geometry and the presence of tantric symbols such as mandala, phallus and vagina, reportedly representing masculine and feminine energies of the universe. Antoine Camilleri MQR, was a Maltese artist and art teacher who made a lasting impact on the development of Maltese modern and contemporary art. He retains a special and unique place in Maltese Contemporary Art, mainly of a spirited father, loving teacher and as an artist who matured through the hardship of life. Camilleri's work is very personal, usually drawing from events or experiences in the artist's life. His self-image in particular is repeated throughout his work using various media including, oils, lino prints, clay and objet trouvé. Throughout the years, Antoine Camilleri experimented with a variety of media and he will be mostly remembered for his unique style as pictures in clay involving the working and manipulation of clay and its dry cracked textures.

Frank Walter, born Francis Archibald Wentworth Walter, was an Antiguan artist, sculptor, photographer, composer, writer, and philosopher. Always shy and reserved, he became a recluse in later life so that he could devote himself to the pursuit of art. Walter has achieved posthumous recognition as one of the Caribbean's most significant artists.

The American pavilion is a national pavilion of the Venice Biennale. It houses the United States' official representation during the Biennale.
