Gamini Iriyagolla

Gamini Abhaya Iriyagolle (known as Gamini Iriyagolle) (c.1936-2003) was a Sri Lankan lawyer, civil servant, presidential advisor and a writer. He was a former member of the Ceylon Civil Service[1] and served as Presidential adviser to J R Jayawardena and Ranasinghe Premadasa [2].

Born to I. M. R. A. Iriyagolla and Ranee Iriyagolle Menike, he had six siblings. His father I. M. R. A. Iriyagolla was Cabinet Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs. Educated at the Royal College, Colombo, where he won the Turnour Prize several times and edited the college magazine. At seventeen he entered the Law Faculty of University of Ceylon after gaining first in the University Entrance Exam. By the age 22 he was the youngest advocate in the island.

Iriyagolla entered the Ceylon Civil Service (CCS) at the age of twenty four having become first at the Civil Service Examination. During his service in the CCS, he attended Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge for postgraduate study (LLM) and served in the Ministry of Agriculture & Food as Deputy Director of Agricultural Development; Co-Director of the Agrarian Research & Training Institute (ARTI); Senior Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture & Lands [2].

Following his retirement from the Sri Lanka Administrative Service he served as Presidential adviser for President Ranasinghe Premadasa. He authored several books and was a regular contributor to several newspapers.

He died on 3 February 2003 with the final rites taking place at the Colombo General Cemetery. He was married to Indrani Iriyagolla, with whom he had two children Nayanee and Rohan.

Ranasinghe Premadasa, the 3rd President of Sri Lanka, was assassinated on 1 May 1993. Premadasa, along with 23 others, were killed in an explosion set off by an LTTE suicide bomber during a May Day rally held in the country's capital of Colombo. The rally was organised by Premadasa's ruling political party, the United National Party.

The Prime Minister's Office is a ministry of the Government of Sri Lanka. Ronald Joseph Godfrey de Mel was a Sri Lankan civil servant and politician. He served as the Minister of Finance under President J. R. Jayewardene's government from 1977 to 1988 and was instrumental in the establishment of the free market economy in Sri Lanka. He was also the longest serving finance minister of Sri Lanka. De Mel served as a Member of Parliament on multiple occasions, first from the Devinuwara District from 1970 to 1989, then from the Matara District from 1994 to 2000, and finally as a National list member of Parliament from 2000 to 2004. He also served as a Senior Adviser to President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Although he was a self-described socialist, de Mel has been credited with introducing capitalism and capitalist reforms to Sri Lanka's economy. He left a lasting mark on Sri Lanka's economy and political life, as recognized by national leaders at his funeral.

Sir Arthur Godwin Ranasinha, CMG, CBE, CCS was a Sri Lankan civil servant and statesmen. A career civil servant in the Ceylon Civil Service, he served as Secretary to the Treasury, Cabinet Secretary and Governor of the Central Bank of Ceylon before apportionment as a Cabinet Minister and Senator. He had also served as Ceylon's Ambassador to Italy.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Assassination of Gamini Dissanayake</span> 1994 murder of Sri Lankan presidential candidate

On 24 October 1994, Sri Lankan parliamentarian Gamini Dissanayake was assassinated by a suicide bomber sent by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Dissanayake was Leader of the Opposition in parliament, and the United National Party's nominee for that year's presidential election. The explosion, set off at a late-night campaign rally in northern Colombo, killed a total of 52 and injured more than 200, with 75 sustaining serious injuries. Among the dead were several other key members of Dissanayake's party.
