The Newcastle Thunder are a professional rugby league club based in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. They play in the Bet Fred League 1 competition, the third tier of rugby league in the United Kingdom. They play their home matches at Kingston Park, also home to rugby union side Newcastle Falcons. The club was known as Gateshead Thunder until 2015.
Gateshead International Stadium (GIS) is a multi-purpose, all-seater venue in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. Originally known as the Gateshead Youth Stadium, the venue was built in 1955 at a cost of £30,000. It has since been extensively re-developed on three occasions. Its capacity of around 11,800 is the greatest in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, the third-largest in Tyne and Wear and the sixth-largest in North East England.
Brian Carney is an Irish professional rugby league commentator and former dual-code rugby international player. He most recently played rugby league for the Warrington Wolves, but he played in the Super League for the Gateshead Thunder, Hull F.C. and the Wigan Warriors, as well as the Newcastle Knights in the NRL. Carney crossed codes to play rugby union for Munster between 2007 and 2009. He earned caps for international representation, for Ireland in both rugby league and rugby union, and also Great Britain in rugby league. He also played Gaelic football as a junior.

Then, he played his entire professional club career in England, for Stanningley ARLFC, in the Super League for the Warrington Wolves, the Leeds Rhinos, Gateshead Thunder (loan), Hull FC, and the Castleford Tigers, and in the Championship for Featherstone Rovers, as a prop or second-row.

Robin Peers is an English former professional rugby league footballer who went on to be head coach of the Boston Thirteens in the USARL, and interim Head Coach of the USA Hawks National Team. He played 13 years for his only club Gateshead Thunder. He made his first grade début in 2002 as a winger, and played there for most of his career, however his final season in 2012 was spent playing full back. Peers was a prominent part of the Gateshead Thunder team that were championship winners in 2008.
Since the formation of Super League in 1996, the RFL has continually expanded the top three divisions of rugby league in Britain with an aim to expand the competitions outside the traditional heartlands.
