Gaza List: Voices against the Genocide (Austrian German : Liste Gaza: Stimmen gegen den Völkermord, or simply Gaza List, Austrian German : Liste Gaza) is a political party in Austria founded in 2024. [6] The party's primary focus is advocating for peace, justice, and human rights, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The party formed as a result of widespread protests in 2023, following the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip. [7]
Liste Gaza was created by a group of activists who alleged that the Austrian government’s stance and policies were not adequately addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. [8] After months of protests within Austria, which began in October 2023, the founders of the party decided to contest the Austrian parliamentary elections. Their goal was to bring attention to the issue of Gaza on the political stage in Austria. [9] Social Austria of the Future (SÖZ) [10] and Home of all Cultures (HaK) endorsed Liste Gaza. [11]
The core ideology of Liste Gaza revolves around advocating for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and a just resolution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The party calls for Austria to return to its constitutional commitment to neutrality in international conflicts. [12] Some of their key political demands include:
Critics[ who? ] have accused the party of antisemitism. Der Standard , an Austrian daily, alleged that party activists involved in the 2024 legislative elections organized anti-Israel demonstrations and described the October 7th Hamas attacks as "resistance." The newspaper reported that most Gaza List activists are members of the Anti-Imperialist Coordination (AIC), a far-left anti-imperialist alliance deemed antisemitic by the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance, a non-governmental organization. [14] [15] Similarly, the daily Die Presse criticized Gaza List as extremist, accusing it of fostering antisemitism by attempting to "emotionalize, instrumentalize, and radicalize" public sentiment. [16]
Liste Gaza participated in the 2024 Austrian legislative election. [17]
