The Tennessee Walking Horse or Tennessee Walker is a breed of gaited horse known for its unique four-beat running-walk and flashy movement. It was originally developed in the southern United States for use on farms and plantations. It is a popular riding horse due to its calm disposition, smooth gaits and sure-footedness. The Tennessee Walking Horse is often seen in the show ring, but is also popular as a pleasure and trail riding horse using both English and Western equipment. Tennessee Walkers are also seen in movies, television shows and other performances.

A stallion is a male horse that has not been gelded (castrated). Stallions follow the conformation and phenotype of their breed, but within that standard, the presence of hormones such as testosterone may give stallions a thicker, "cresty" neck, as well as a somewhat more muscular physique as compared to female horses, known as mares, and castrated males, called geldings.

Life and show career

Gen's Armed and Dangerous is a chestnut stallion sired by Pride's Generator and out of the mare Melana Ebony, who was herself sired by the World Grand Champion Ebony Masterpiece. He was bred by B. G. Alford from Oxford, Mississippi, [1] and his first owner was Claude Crowley. Shortly after the start of his show career, Gen's Armed and Dangerous was bought by Russ Thompson who in turn sold him to Susan Arthur Gordon of California. [2] Gen's Armed and Dangerous was trained by Thompson, a Hartselle, Alabama native living in California, who started his career as a mechanic before trading a motorcycle for a Tennessee Walking Horse. The horse sparked an interest and Thompson soon became a professional trainer. [2] Ridden by Thompson, Gen's Armed and Dangerous won the Reserve Two-Year-Old World Championship in the 1991 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. He was the 1992 Three-Year-Old World Champion, and the Reserve Four-Year-Old World Champion in 1993. The next year, 1994, he was entered into the World Grand Championship and won first out of 18 horses. It was the first time a horse trained in California had ever won the World Grand Championship; most winners are trained in Tennessee or other Southern states. [2]

Chestnut (coat) Horse coat color

Chestnut is a hair coat color of horses consisting of a reddish-to-brown coat with a mane and tail the same or lighter in color than the coat. Chestnut is characterized by the absolute absence of true black hairs. It is one of the most common horse coat colors, seen in almost every breed of horse.

Pride's Generator (1975-2001) was a Tennessee Walking Horse who won three World Championships before being retired to breeding. Standing at stud first at S. W. Beech Stables and later at Waterfall Farms, he sired over 2,000 foals, of which two became World Grand Champions and over 100 became World Champions.

Ebony Masterpiece was a Tennessee Walking Horse stallion who won a World Grand Championship in 1962. After his show career he retired to stud, where he sired over 3,500 foals, six of which also became World Grand Champions.

Breeding career

Gen's Armed and Dangerous was retired to stud in Tennessee after winning the World Grand Championship, and sold again to a group of Tennessee owners. [1] In 2004 he was named Sire of the Year by the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors' Association, a year after his son The Whole Nine Yards won the World Grand Championship.

The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors' Association is the oldest breed association for the Tennessee Walking Horse. It was founded in 1935 and is headquartered in Lewisburg, Tennessee. The association also runs the Tennessee Walking Horse Hall of Fame.

The Whole Nine Yards was a Tennessee Walking Horse stallion who won his breed's World Grand Championship in 2003. He was trained by Bill Bobo.

At the 2005 Celebration, his offspring won 12 World Championships. [1]

Sam Paschal was a Tennessee Walking Horse trainer from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Paschal trained three horses who won the breed's World Grand Championship.

Merry Walker was a Tennessee Walking Horse mare. She gave birth to the show horses Go Boy's Shadow and Rodger's Perfection, who won three World Grand Championships between them.

He's Puttin' on the Ritz (1991-2016) was a Tennessee Walking Horse stallion who won World Championships at the ages of two and three before winning his breed's World Grand Championship in 1996.

William Earl "Bill" Bobo is a Tennessee Walking Horse trainer. He won the World Grand Championship at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in 2003 with the stallion The Whole Nine Yards. Bobo also showed the notable horse Rowdy Rev, who competed in the World Grand Championship several times but never won. Bobo has been named Trainer of the Year by the Walking Horse Trainers Association.

The Coach (2004-2017) was a Tennessee Walking Horse stallion who won the World Grand Championship in 2010.

Game World is a Tennessee Walking Horse stallion who won the World Grand Championship in the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in 2011.

Chad Baucom (1967–2016) was a Tennessee Walking Horse trainer. He was best known for winning the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration on the stallion Walk Time Charlie.

Gen's Black Maverick is a Tennessee Walking Horse stallion. He has won two World Championships and the 2017 World Grand Championship in the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration.

Vic Thompson was a Tennessee Walking Horse trainer. He and the horse Sun's Jet Parade won the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration's World Grand Championship in 1957. Thompson was the first president of the Walking Horse Trainers' Association and was later inducted into the Tennessee Walking Horse Hall of Fame.
