Gilgit Agency Agency of the British Raj

The Gilgit Agency was an agency established by the British Indian Empire over the subsidiary states of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir at its northern periphery, mainly with the objective of strengthening these territories against Russian encroachment. The subsidiary states included Hunza, Nagar and other states in the present day districts of Gupis-Yasin, Ghizer, Darel, Tangir and Diamer. The agency was based in the town of Gilgit, which was itself under the direct administration of the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ghizer District (1974–2019)

The Ghizer District, formed in 1974, is the westernmost part of the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. Currently, it is proposed to split Ghizer District into two (2) districts:

  1. The western part of Ghizer District includes the actual Ghizer/ Gherz Valley of Phander, Gupis and Yasin. The name as Ghizer District will be kept with this region due to the connectivity to its origin.
  2. While the eastern part of the current District will include Puniyal and Ishkoman. And probably the newly district would be given the name as Puniyal-Ishkoman District.
Shandur Pass

Shandur Pass is a pass located in between the Gupis-Yasin District of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It is often called 'Roof of the World'. Shandur top is located in Upper Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and has a flat plateau and can be crossed between late April and early November. The grade is very gradual, and the area is crossed by plentiful small streams during summer.

Ishkoman Valley Place in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan

The Ishkoman valley lies in the north of Ghizer District in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, bordering Afghanistan and the Pamir Wakhan Corridor. It is located at a range of altitudes, from 7,000 to 12,000 feet. The valley consists of more than 30 villages, with a total population of 30,000 inhabitants. Four major languages are spoken here: Wakhi, Khowar, Shina and Burushaski.

Gilgit River

The Gilgit River is a tributary of the Indus River, and flows through the Gupis-Yasin, Ghizer and Gilgit districts of Gilgit-Baltistan. The upper sections of the river are called Gupis River and Ghizer River. The Gilgit River starts from Shandur Lake, joins the Indus River at junction point of three mountains ranges near towns of Juglot and Bunji.

Darkot Pass

Darkot pass is a high mountain pass that connects Baroghil Valley in Chitral and Rawat valley of Ghizer District in Gilgit, Pakistan. It is also known as "Darkut".

Bichhar pass is a high mountain pass at the boundary of the Ghizer and Gilgit districts in Gilgit–Baltistan of Pakistan. To the north of the pass is Bichhari village in the Naltar valley in Gilgit district. To the south of the pass is the village Sherqila on the Gilgit river in the Ghizer district.

Mastuj Tehsil Tehsil in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Mastuj is a town and Tehsil of Chitral District in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It is located at 36°17'0N 72°31'0E with an altitude of 2359 metres. There are ruins of old fort built originally in 18th century and re constructed later couple of times.

The Katoor Dynasty is a dynasty, which along with its collateral branches ruled the sovereign, later princely state of Chitral and its neighbours in the eastern Hindu Kush region for over 450 years, from around 1570 until 1947. At the height its power under Mehtar Aman ul-Mulk the territory controlled by the dynasty extended from Asmar in the Kunar Valley to Sher Qilla in the Gilgit valley. The Mehtar of Chitral was an influential player in the power politics of the region as he acted as an intermediary between the rulers of Badakhshan, the Yousafzai pashtuns, the Maharaja of Kashmir and later the Amir of Afghanistan.

Phander Lake

Phander Lake is situated in the Phander Village, in Koh-i-Ghizer, Gupis-Yasin District, the westernmost part of the Gilgit–Baltistan region and northernmost territory of Pakistan. This lake is an important source of fresh water.

Niat Qabool Hayat Kakakhel was a Gilgit-Baltistani politician in Pakistan and, after 1973, assistant to the Governor of Gupis. Kakakhel was a member of the Central Asia Supreme Council and a senior member of the Aga Khan Council. He was a ruling official during the Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR) period in the early 1970s.

Khalti Lake

Khalti Lake is situated in the Tehsil Punial of Ghizer District, the westernmost part of the Gilgit–Baltistan region and northernmost territory of Pakictan. This lake is an important source of fresh water and has a stock of trout. A PTDC motel is situated nearby with a view of the lake. The water is extremely cold which flows directly from surrounding glaciers. The lake usually freezes in winter season and people can easily walk on it.

Khukush Langar (Baha) Lake

Baha Lake is situated in Shandur Valley Tehsil Gupis of Ghizer District, Ghizer District, the westernmost part of the Northern Areas and northernmost territory of Pakistan. This lake is an important source of fresh water with full of trout. Baha Lake is a mysterious lake in Pakistan.

Ghizer Tehsil is a tehsil, an administrative division of Ghizer District, an extreme western part of the Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan.

The Gilgit Division is a first-order administrative division of Pakistan's dependent territory of Gilgit-Baltistan.

The Gupis-Yasin District is the westernmost district of the 14 districts of Pakistan's dependent territory of Gilgit-Baltistan. The Gupis-Yasin District was created in 2019 from the Gupis Tehsil, the Phander Tehsil, and the Yasin Tehsil, which were the three western tehsils of the former, larger Ghizer District.

The Ghizer District is one of the 14 districts of Pakistan's dependent territory of Gilgit-Baltistan. The former Ghizer District (1974–2019), which spanned the entire upper Gilgit Valley was divided into the Gupis-Yasin District and the present, smaller Ghizer District in 2019.
