The village is located just southeast of the lake Limavatnet and about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) east of the municipal centre of Ålgård. The village is the site of Gjesdal Church. The area is locally referred to as Bygda ("the village").

The lake Oltedalsvatnet lies on the southwestern edge of the village. Oltedal Church is located in the village. The village has some small industries such as yarn making, chemicals, and sand/gravel pits.
